Description of Work

Position Definition: Performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and beautification of City parks, beaches, recreational areas, and associated facilities. This position supports the safe, clean, and attractive condition of grounds, amenities, and structures through routine maintenance, operation of landscaping equipment, and assistance with facility upkeep. Work is performed independently and as part of a team under general supervision.

General Duties:

  • Perform manual and semi-skilled maintenance and beautification work in City parks, beach areas, recreational spaces, and related facilities.
  • Operate and maintain tractor-type mowers and other landscaping and grounds-maintenance equipment.
  • Assist with the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of park and beach facilities, including buildings, pavilions, comfort stations, shelters, bleachers, fences, picnic tables, benches, walkways, parking areas, and similar structures.
  • Perform minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs, washers, faucets, irrigation components, and repairing park or beach furnishings.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining recreational equipment and amenities to ensure safety, cleanliness, and accessibility.
  • Perform seasonal work including planting, mulching, leaf and debris removal, preparation of grounds for changing weather conditions, and other routine seasonal maintenance activities.
  • Follow established safety procedures, guidelines, and proper use of tools and equipment at all times.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform related duties as assigned in support of parks, beaches, and recreational facility operations.
  • Assist with setup, breakdown, and support of community events, athletic activities, and park- or beach-based programs.
  • Respond courteously to public inquiries and provide general information regarding facilities, rules, and available amenities.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills related to maintenance practices, equipment operation, and safety.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays based on operational needs and scheduling requirements.

Supervised By: Receives general supervision from the Superintendent of Parks and Public Property and/or their designee.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of

  • general park and beach maintenance practices and facility upkeep;

  • the safe operation and routine maintenance of tractor-type mowers and landscaping equipment;

  • basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.

  • Skill in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools.

  • Ability to

  • manage time, prioritize tasks, and follow verbal and written instructions;

  • identify maintenance needs and perform appropriate corrective actions;

  • work independently and cooperatively as part of a team;

  • perform physical labor in varying weather and environmental conditions;

  • perform physically demanding work, including lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions

  • communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to demonstrate competence in manual labor and semi-skilled work involving grounds maintenance, landscaping, facility upkeep, basic building or mechanical support tasks, and/or operation or maintenance of tractor-type mowers or similar equipment.

Special Licenses/Certifications AND/OR Supplemental Information

License or Certification: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Estimated Start and End Date: April 2026 through November 2026. Dates are approximate and will be adjusted based on operational needs.
