PRIMARY PURPOSE:Responsible for patrolling City of Kirkwood parks and recreational facilities, assisting the public, enforcing park rules and City ordinances, and maintaining the security and safety of park grounds and facilities.SUPERVISION:Reports to the Senior Park Ranger and Superintendent of Parks.DESCRIPTION OF WORK: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSResponsible for patrolling the following grounds, buildings, and related facilities using a provided patrol vehicle:Kirkwood City ParkGreentree ParkEmmenegger Nature ParkWalker ParkKoestering ParkMonfort ParkFireman's Memorial ParkBill McEntee Memorial ParkFillmore ParkMitchell ParkMeacham Park Memorial ParkKirkwood Aquatic CenterKirkwood Community CenterAvery ParkGrant's Trail TrailheadKirkwood Performing Arts CenterAssist with closing and monitoring activity at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center.Document all activities and observations through daily activity logs, issued permits, and additional reports as required.Secure all buildings, equipment, and grounds in accordance with park closing procedures.Ensure park patrons have vacated the premises prior to park closing.Assist park patrons by providing directions to facilities, information, and other assistance as needed.Issue warnings and tickets for violations of park rules and City ordinances, as authorized, occurring within the parks.Assist department employees at the concession stand, tennis shop, community center, performing arts center, and aquatic center when requested.Monitor lighting for athletic fields and racquet sport courts and adjust schedules as needed.Monitor sports field conditions and update the rainout line when needed.Submit schedule availability on a monthly basis. Must be able to work some major holidays and be available for scheduled special events.Notify the Park Superintendent of damage, vandalism, unsafe conditions, or malfunctioning equipment and, where possible, temporarily secure the situation to ensure public and employee safety.Provide security for special events and emergencies within City boundaries.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:Valid driver's license.Participation in related ranger training programs.Ability to obtain CPR certification as required.Must be at least 21 years of age to obtain a valid Security Officer license from the St. Louis County Police Department and renew annually. Must obtain mace/baton certifications and renew every five years.Comprehensive knowledge of all patrolled grounds, facilities, and access points.Comprehensive knowledge of standard law enforcement procedures and practices used in public relations, policy enforcement, and communication with police.Knowledge of hazards and public safety considerations associated with recreational resources.Experience in self-defense/baton tactics and protection of the public.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with co-workers and the public.Ability to think and act clearly in emergency situations.Ability to effectively communicate and work with members of the Police Department, other City departments, and other agencies.A minimum of three years' experience in security, military, or law enforcement is preferred.Must have working knowledge of desktop and laptop computers, as well as smartphone applications.WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND POSITION-RELATED HAZARDS:Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposure to dust, ice, snow, heat, rain, and physical hazards associated with working in this environment. SCHEDULE:Two Part-Time Positions AvailablePosition 1 – Set Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per week on a set rotating schedule, including evening and weekend shifts. Additional hours may be available based on department needs.Position 2 – Seasonal Schedule: Hours will vary based on the season and department needs. More hours are typically available April–September due to increased park events, with fewer hours October–March.NOTE:This job description is not intended to limit the duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position.
