The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation is actively searching for a full-time Park & Recreation (P&R) Equipment Operator to join our team!

Located at our Headquarters Office in Boise, ID, this position will primarily operate within our South Region. Here, amidst the breathtaking landscapes and outdoor wonders that define Idaho's South Region, you'll serve as a P&R Equipment Operator, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the accessibility and allure of the extensive trail network.

Teaming up closely with our Recreation Program Specialist, you'll actively contribute to the planning and execution of trail projects, leaving an indelible impact on the recreational offerings of the region. During the warmer months, you'll expertly craft and preserve trails as a Trail Cat Operator, surrounded by Idaho's remarkable views. Your work will not only enhance the trail system but also provide a safe and enjoyable experience for outdoor enthusiasts, ensuring the long-term preservation of these natural resources. During the winter months, your focus will shift to operating snow grooming equipment to maintain groomed cross-country ski trails at night near Idaho City. This role will also include the operation of snow removal equipment to service parking locations. Nighttime operations are essential for ensuring the trails are in optimal condition for daytime use, requiring careful navigation and precision in low visibility conditions.

Example of Duties:

• Design and layout Off-Highway trails on state and federal lands.

Requires: Knowledge of trail construction techniques, water drainage issues, and state/federal requirements for maintenance/construction specifications.

• Construct/maintain summer Off-Highway Vehicle trails across a broad spectrum of public lands.

Requires: The ability to operate multiple pieces of trail-specific heavy equipment for the purposes of public use.

• The remote nature of these efforts also requires the ability of the position to maintain these same vehicles under difficult situations and without the benefit of extensive tools in a shop environment. Frequently, these maintenance efforts are conducted in below-freezing temperatures as well.
• Incumbents work in inclement weather and operate equipment in steep and rocky terrain, near cliffs, in heavily wooded areas and must have the ability to operate snow-groomers in remote locations at night.
• Incumbents must perform construction-type work such as lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 90 pounds, bending, stooping, and climbing in and around construction-type equipment, and working in adverse climatic conditions.
• Summer operations may require 10-hour shifts, 8 days on, 6 days off, and winter operations are executed primarily at night.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• This position may require working nights, weekends, and holidays, often in all weather conditions.
• The role requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, as well as frequent bending, stooping, and climbing ladders, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout the course of employment.
• Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
• Requires the ability to operate various off highway vehicles specifically, ATV's /UTV's and motorbikes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Incumbents must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) within 120 days of hire and retain it for the duration of employment, as well as pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.

• Good knowledge of safety measures and practices, and the use, care, and disposal of hazardous automotive materials and waste when operating heavy equipment, including trail-specific equipment and snow groomers. Typically gained by at least two years of independent experience operating heavy equipment, including trail-specific equipment and snow groomers, and handling hazardous automotive materials and waste.
• Knowledge of trail construction techniques, water drainage issues, and state/federal maintenance and construction specifications, including grading surfaces and compacting soil to rough specifications. Typically gained by at least one season (approximately three to six months) of experience working with trail construction, water drainage, and related grading or compacting tasks under state/federal requirements.
• Experience operating, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing construction and trail heavy equipment, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems. Typically gained by at least six months of experience operating, maintaining, and diagnosing or repairing construction equipment and trail heavy equipment.
• Experience designing, fabricating, and welding construction-type devices. Typically gained by at least six months of experience designing, fabricating, and welding construction-type devices.
• Experience preparing records and reports, including checking for accuracy and logging or posting information. Typically gained by at least six months of experience preparing records and reports.
