Job Summary
Assist with the maintenance of parks, ground areas, facilities and/or equipment by performing various manual tasks. Parks Coordinators, Level 1 will be assigned to park maintenance, cleaning and custodial services within the Parks and Facilities Division. They may also be assigned to work in several areas or functions based upon operational needs. Normal working hours are 2pm-9pm Tuesday-Friday however, evenings and weekends are required for events and as needed. Projects and tasks performed by this position are directed by the Facilities Foreman.
Starting Salary Range: The starting salary is between the minimum and midpoint of the range. Candidates will start at the minimum of the range ($16.92 per hour) unless their skills, experience, education or other factors exceed the qualifications for the position.
Essential Job Functions
- Leads custodial tasks related to the day-to-day operation of assigned areas; coordinates work duties and tasks with Foreman and Parks & Facilities Superintendent.
- Performs janitorial and custodial tasks involved in maintenance of parks and property; includes maintenance and custodial tasks related to restroom facilities, and trash.
- Works in the maintenance and repair of parks and recreation facilities, equipment, buildings and grounds; performs associated paperwork.
- Responsible for maintenance, keeping active inventory, ordering supplies, materials and equipment for the department (if assigned to Equipment area).
- Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience as listed below which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
One to three years of experience in performance of custodial and maintenance work.
- Licensure or Certification Requirements
Current and valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract in order to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Knowledge of:
- The principles, practices, equipment, tools and materials used in parks maintenance.
Skill in:
- Operation of applicable machinery.
- Basic maintenance and repair related to plumbing, electrical, building maintenance and inspection.
- Handling queries from citizens.
- Working with outside vendors or contractors.
Ability to: (Mental and Physical Abilities)
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
- Work independently with limited direction given.
- Apply problem solving skills and perform critical thinking.
- Understand and follow specific oral instructions.

Important Job Functions
- Handles equipment in a safe and appropriate manner; uses safety equipment when appropriate.

- Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Lift heavy articles requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and repetitive motions.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Working Conditions:
- The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be called to work 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The worker may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
