What You'll Do:

Starting Salary $45,631.04

The Parks Maintenance Supervisor performs difficult skilled and responsible technical work supervising and participating in the work of a park maintenance crew; does related work as required. Work schedule may include nights, weekends and holidays.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and work guidance is provided to assigned work crews.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, trains, organizes and supervises the work of small crews in the daily operations of park maintenance activities;
  • Prepares and maintains daily work reports;
  • Trains new workers in the safe operation of tools and equipment;
  • Supervises and participates in the park maintenance, repair, installation and construction work;
  • Inspects and maintains outdoor courts;
  • Coordinates the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields;
  • Mows, trims, cleans and maintains park areas using specialized equipment such as tractors with attachments, reel mowers, pickup trucks with trailers, heavy dump trucks, backhoes, tractor-loaders, chippers, chain saws, riding mowers, airless paint sprayers and other related equipment;
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions;
  • Makes and adjusts work assignments;
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials;
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides as needed to maintain healthy and attractive grounds;
  • Cuts down and removes dead trees and shrubs and weeds flower beds;
  • Prunes, mulches and plants trees and shrubs;
  • Grades, seeds, fertilizes, waters and sods turf areas;
  • Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems;
  • Prepares simple work reports;
  • Trains and instructs subordinates;
  • Ensures that all park maintenance work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Thorough knowledge of golf course maintenance and management techniques acquired from a combination of formal education and on-the-job training.
  • Must have a North Carolina Pesticide license or be able to obtain during probationary period of one (1) year
  • Thorough understanding of local, state and federal safety regulations and OSHA
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

 

​​Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) year degree in horticulture, turf management, or similar field
  • Previous experience in a paid supervisory position

Physical/Mental Requirements:

Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and necessary to operate equipment safely and enforce safety regulations.
 

Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see people other workers, equipment and vehicles from a distance for safety reasons when operating equipment and supervising employees.  Both eyes 20/25 – R 20/30 – L 20/30 corrected
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see operating panel of equipment and other work aids close at hand. Both eyes 20/25 corrected
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.  Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time and to operate the equipment safely.   Depth perception – 4
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. To ensure safety, must be able to see wide span of area to observe employees and other people as they enter and leave work area.
  • Accommodation – Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check the entire work area. Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly from equipment and the immediate work area to observe other equipment or people who may be located at varying distances. 

Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:

  • Medium to Heavy Work

    Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or

    Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and

    A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position.

    Work requires walking, standing, lifting, stretching, pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, squatting, bending, and stooping, although worker does sit on occasions. 

    Must be able to move quickly since safety factors are involved.

    Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s).

    Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm.

Reasoning

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives and perform the relative task. As a supervisor, must be able to make responsible decisions so good judgement is extremely important.

Mathematics Ability

  • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to use arithmetic to the extent of using figures when measuring areas and supplies, when calculating and counting. Must be able to count and figure the amounts of materials and/or supplies needed for golf course maintenance and repair assignments. Must be able to make reports containing mathematical calculations.

Language Ability

  • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.


 Environmental Conditions

Physical Surroundings

  • The Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures.  Combining the type of work performed with the various weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot or cold environment.  The position is best suited for someone who doesn’t mind getting wet, dirty, and sweaty.
     

Hazards

  • The Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor will be exposed to trash, trees, grass, shrubbery, dirt, chemicals and fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, debris, insects, etc. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
