Job Description:
The City of Idaho Falls is looking for a Parks Maintenance Operator II. In this position you will performs a variety of working level, semi-skilled and skilled duties related to on-site supervising and engaging in the maintenance, upkeep, construction and beautification of City parks, grounds and facilities. This position requires working nights and weekends possibly on a rotating schedule.

Works under close to general supervision of a Maintenance Operator(s) III, Lead Maintenance Operator or Parks Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May provide close supervision to Maintenance Operator(s) I, seasonal, part-time, or temporary Maintenance Helpers or Laborers.
Essential Functions
May perform one or several of the essential functions below depending upon assignment.
Performs day-to-day maintenance on parks grounds, Parks and Recreation facilities, pathways, and undeveloped areas maintained by Parks and Recreation Department; follows maintenance program(s) procedures and schedules; records and submits production and inventory information; makes recommendations to improve maintenance program(s) effectiveness.
Operates light and heavy equipment and utilizes hand tools; including but not limited to tractors, loaders, dump trucks, refuse collection truck, mowers, power hand tools, handheld power equipment, ice resurfacer, snow blower, ATVs, UTVs, floor scrubber, shovels and rakes; Performs general maintenance and upkeep of equipment by performing preventive maintenance and repairing some small equipment.
Mows and trims grass and other vegetation in landscaped and undeveloped areas; prunes or removes trees & shrubs as needed; removes weeds, debris and garbage from grounds.
Plants grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers; grades soil and landscape materials to required specifications; follows best management practices; applies nutrients to grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers; mixes and applies pesticides; maintains records of pesticide applications.
Prepares and maintains sports fields, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, and other parks sports facilities for use; applies field marking paint and chalk; grades and levels playing surfaces.
Maintains, repairs, and installs park amenities including but not limited to playground equipment and surfacing, fencing, signs, benches, picnic tables, restrooms, and shelters; maintains walking surfaces and parking areas; shovels and plows snow; applies ice melt to surfaces to ensure safe conditions.
Maintains and installs irrigation systems; follows established irrigation schedules; adjusts sprinkler heads to properly cover watering area(s); repairs or replaces sprinkler heads, irrigation valves and waterlines as needed; operates irrigation controller and water management software to ensure proper irrigations schedules are being maintained.
Assists as needed with events and holiday decorating at parks, and City facilities; coordinates facility setup for activities and events, which includes but is not limited to, planning, organizing, setting up and taking down chairs, tables and other supplies at City facilities; meets with event organizers and vendors prior to and during events; prepares grounds and facilities for special event use, which may include installing and removing temporary structures and traffic control devices; monitors grounds during special events, which includes, emptying garbage cans, cleaning up garbage and debris at event, and interacting with event attendees to ensure customer service goals are being met; removes garbage and debris after event.
Cleans, sanitizes and stocks park restrooms; sweeps, mops, polishes and vacuums floors; empties and cleans waste receptacles; washes windows; replaces burnt out bulbs; clean and prepare park shelters for use; monitors building temperature to ensure comfortable conditions. Collects garbage and refuse, maintains and cleans refuse containers.
May direct part-time or seasonal work crew in the performance of park maintenance functions; ensures quality of work; may train crew members and volunteers in proper operations and methods...
Supervises and leads the work of one or more crews; monitors employee activities to ensure safety procedures are adhered to; provides on-the-job training to parks employees and volunteers.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1.Education and Experience:
A. Sufficient education or training background to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform above and related duties
AND
B. Two (2) year experience performing the above or directly related duties.
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of parks, grounds, and facilities maintenance, and upkeep; working knowledge of ground preparation practices and procedures; park construction; various light and heavy equipment grass, shrub, and tree care and grooming; pesticide use; hazards and related safety procedures associated with above duties; interpersonal communication skills.
Skill in the operation of light through heavy equipment, such as, lawn mowers, front-end loader, tractor, backhoe, heavy dump truck, etc.; use of a variety of hand tools.
Ability to follow detailed work instructions in the performance of assigned duties; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; perform manual tasks for sustained periods; perform strenuous physical labor; tolerate year-round weather extremes in the work environment; establish and maintain computerized production and inventory records; train, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers; recognize and identify common weeds and pests; recognize and identify diseases common to turf and greenery; develop effective working relationships with Supervisors, fellow employees and the public; interpret maps and construction drawings.
3.Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid driver's license or depending on assignment may be required possess a valid Idaho Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements.
May be required to work on twenty-four (24) hour stand-by or "on call".
May be required to obtain a professional pesticide applicator's license.
Work Environment
Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting (50 lbs.), etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Exposure to weather, environmental hazards and dangers resulting from working around equipment. Workers are frequently exposed to moving mechanical equipment, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance.
