Position Summary:
The part-time Adult Transitions Pathways GED Reading Foundations Instructor works with a small group of adult learners to strengthen the reading comprehension and test-taking skills needed for success on the GED exam. Through engaging, targeted instruction, the instructor helps students build reading proficiency, develop effective testing strategies, and increase confidence in preparing for the computer-based GED tests. The instructor monitors and evaluates student progress, provides individualized support to address learning needs, and fosters critical thinking, information processing, and communication skills. Collaboration with other Adult Transitions staff ensures students receive coordinated support as they prepare to earn their GED and successfully transition to post-secondary education, training, or employment.
Essential Duties include:
- Facilitate a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement, confidence, and academic success.
- Provide targeted, small-group instruction focused on improving reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and test-taking strategies for the GED exam.
- Deliver individualized instruction and interventions based on student learning needs and assessment results.
- Assess student progress using GED Ready practice tests, CASAS assessments, and other instructional tools to guide learning and monitor readiness for GED testing.
- Work one-on-one with students to identify barriers to testing success and assist eligible students in completing documentation and applications for GED testing accommodations.
- Utilize instructional technology to support classroom instruction, remediation, assessment, and student progress monitoring.
- Integrate digital literacy skills and authentic reading materials into instruction to prepare students for the computer-based GED exam.
- Build positive relationships with students by providing encouragement, academic coaching, and referrals to appropriate support services when needed.
- Maintain accurate student attendance, assessment, and progress records in accordance with program and grant requirements.
- Participate in Adult Transitions staff meetings, professional development activities, and program planning to support continuous improvement.
- Comply with Washtenaw Community College policies, procedures, work practices, and standards of professional conduct.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- In-person at Washtenaw Community College.
Hours/Schedule:
Three-semester grant funded appointment consisting of three consecutive 11-week classes. Each position includes 8 hours of instructional time per week.
Two positions are available:
Daytime Position: Mondays and Thursdays, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Evening Position: Mondays and Thursdays, 5:00-9:00 p.m.
In addition to instructional time, up to an additional 8 hours per week may be required for non-instructional duties, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- Bachelor's degree in education, reading, or a related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in reading instruction and literacy development.
- Experience teaching reading to students with learning disabilities or other diverse learning needs.
- Ability to scaffold instruction and differentiate learning to meet individual student needs.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency with educational technology and basic computer applications.
- Reliable and predictable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Reading Specialist endorsement, reading instruction certification, or significant coursework in reading or literacy instruction.
- Master's degree in education, reading, literacy, or a related field.
- Experience working with adult learners preparing for the GED or high school equivalency credential.
- Experience in social work, case management, educational planning, or resource coordination for at-risk or underserved populations.
