The purposeof thispositionis to perform routineandcomplexpublic safety workin the enforcementofanimalcontrol ordinances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Thefollowing duties arenormal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Patrolsstreetsto locatestray,abandoned, lostor injured animals.
  • Capturesanimalsandtransportsthem to the animal shelter.
  • Responds to complaints concerninganimalproblemsorviolationsofanimal controlordinances,including,butnotlimited to, animalsrunningatlarge,bites, general nuisances,viciousanimals,propertydamageor injuries.
  • Removesdead,injured ordangerousanimalsfrompublicandprivate property.
  • Caresfor, feeds and housesanimals at the animalshelter on an as-needed basis.
  • Observesanimalsincustodyfor indicationsof disease.
  • Providesmaintenanceandupkeep for equipment and vehicles.
  • Investigatesviolationsofanimal control ordinances and issueswarnings or citations as required;appearsincourt to testifyregardinganimalcontrol cases. Servesvariouscriminal or civilnotices or papersrelated to enforcementofanimal control ordinances.
  • Assistsother city departments regardinganimalrelated incidents.
  • Assiststhe publicinredemption and adoptionofimpoundedanimalsfrom the kennel.
  • Worksan assignedshift usingownjudgmentindecidingcourseofactionbeingexpected to handledifficultandemergencysituationswithout assistance.
  • Carriesoutduties in conformance withFederal, State,County andCitylawsand ordinances.
  • Maintainscontactwithpolicesupervisory personnel to coordinateinvestigationactivities,provide mutual assistanceduringemergencysituations andprovides general informationaboutdepartment activities.
  • Appearsincourt if necessary.

MinimumTraining andExperienceRequiredtoPerform Essential JobFunctions

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • MACA certification or ability to obtain it within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid Missouri driver's license.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience handling or caring for animals in a shelter environment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • The employeeisoccasionallyrequired to run, overcomephysical barriers, subdueanimals, use hands to finger, handleor feelobjects, toolsorcontrols, reachwithhandsandarms, climb or balance,stoop,kneel, crouch or crawl,andtaste or The employee must occasionallylift,and/or move more than 50 pounds.
  • Whileperforming the dutiesofthisjob, the employeefrequentlyworksinoutsideweather The employeeoccasionallyworksnear mechanical parts,inhighprecariousplaces,with dead ordiseasedanimals,exposed to wetandhumidconditions, withlittlerisk for injuryotherthan a riskofanimal bite.
