Description

Duties and Responsiblities

  • Inspects commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential buildings for compliance with the fire prevention code
  • Inspects job sites for compliance with all applicable codes and standards pertaining to the installation, testing, and inspection of fire protection equipment and systems, and witnesses the required performance tests conducted by the installing contractor
  • Maintains files, records, and reports regarding inspections, permits, and complaints in both written and electronic formats
  • Issues fire prevention code permits
  • Read and interpret codes, plans, specifications, and engineering drawings
  • Schedules appointments, keeps accurate records and prepares reports of sufficient quality to be used in judicial proceedings
  • Works with property owners, business owners, and occupants to achieve compliance with codes
  • Investigates complaints from the public on fire and life safety issues
  • Serves summonses to appear in court
  • Testifies in court for prosecution of code violations
  • Assists public, various government agencies, emergency providers, and contractors with a variety of requests
  • Serves as liaison between the business community and the Fire and Rescue Department
  • Assists operational personnel with pertinent information concerning major occupancies in their response areas and in the development of pre-plans
  • Assists with preparation and dissemination of educational fire prevention programs and materials as requested
  • Assists with investigation of accidentally and criminally initiated fires, hazardous materials incidents, etc. as requested
  • Provides support in active investigations from initial scene investigation to courtroom testimony as requested
  • Contributes to a positive work environment

Requirements

Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education or experience equivalent to a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required with a minimum of 3 years of experience and general knowledge in at least one of the following areas: fire protection, fire prevention, firefighting, or building trades. Associate's Degree is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid and appropriate driver's license
  • Certification as a Virginia Fire Marshal Academy Fire Inspector (1031) with proof of continuing education as required for maintaining summons powers
  • Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Building Code Academy as a Fire Prevention Inspector, as provided in the Virginia Certification Standards
  • Certification as a Virginia Fire Marshal Academy Fire Investigator (1033) desired;
  • May be required to obtain additional certifications in other fire prevention disciplines after hire at discretion of the Fire Marshal.

This position is part-time/seasonal and is not eligble for benefits.
