Part Time Commissary Keeper/Keeper Assistant

The Wilderness Wildlife Center is looking for commissary keepers/keeper assistants to join the animal care team to help care for a diverse collection of carnivores and hoofstock including big cats, bears, wolves, small carnivores, white rhino, elk, bison, moose, bighorn sheep and a variety of African hoofstock. This is a great entry level opportunity for those recently completing internships and looking for their next step into the field. Commissary keepers/keeper assistants would mainly be responsible for diet prep and keeping the commissary clean and organized and helping full time keeper staff with animal care when time allows including but not limited to cleaning, diet prep, enrichment, training, medicating, etc.

The Wilderness Wildlife Center is an AZA certified related facility located 20 minutes west of Pittsburgh. We have helped rescue many orphaned native wildlife and have expanded to help with AZA SSP and breeding programs. We are closed to the public but do occasionally give small tours.

Under supervision of the Curator and Lead Conservationist(s), commissary keeper/keeper assistants perform a wide range of responsibilities at the Wilderness Wildlife Center.

Responsibilities include:

Ensures commissary protocols, recordkeeping, labeling, and food safety measures are carried out daily.

Maintains awareness of and works in accordance with applicable USDA, FDA, and AZA regulations, guidelines, and best practices related to animal nutrition, food safety, and commissary operations.

Prepares daily diets for animal collection, following written and oral instructions concerning food type, quantity, and preparation format.

Maintains weekly product inventory records and diet change requests

Submits requisitions for restocking food inventory and places orders with lead conservationists as needed.

Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of work area, food surfaces, and equipment within the commissary

Packs and delivers diets and supplies throughout the facility as needed
\t\t\t\t\t\t

Supports receiving operations, including unloading food shipments, verifying deliveries against packing slips, and operating equipment including but not limited to pallet jacks.

Assists hoofstock team with browsing, processing, and appropriate storage of browse for diets
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
Assists carnivore team with processing and storage of bamboo
\t\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t
\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

Cleaning and maintaining commissary on a daily basis
\t\t\t\t\t\t

Cleaning and maintaining habitats, indoor holdings, yards and service areas assigned.

\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t
Continual monitoring of habitats and service areas with attention to detail.

Exemplary animal care and providing assistance in veterinary management

Operant conditioning of collection for husbandry behaviors and providing enrichment

Animal observation and monitoring for behavioral and medical needs

Maintaining records, including entering data into ZIMS

Contributes to open team discussions and sharing ideas in positive and professional manner

Qualifications

Must be able to work outside year-round under typical Western Pennsylvania weather conditions and temperatures for extended periods of time.

Must be able to work in uneven terrain with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens
\t\t\t\t\t\t

Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds.

This is a part time position that is no more than 30 hours a week. Applicants may be required to work any combination of 4 days in the seven day workweek including weekends and holidays.
