    Department Information

    The Indiana University (IU) Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is the central hub for cancer research and education across Indiana University. It is the states only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and 1 of only 57 in the nation. The comprehensive designation recognizes the centers excellence in basic, clinical, and population research; outstanding educational activities; and effective community outreach across the state.

    The IUSCCC Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) is responsible for linking research in the IUSCCC to the needs of Indiana residents and disseminating that research in order to lower cancer mortality and morbidity and to reduce cancer disparities in Indiana. This effort requires coordination of activities throughout the state, including partnership with academic and community organizations, evaluation of outcomes, and continual environmental scans to assess the impact on cancer morbidity and mortality.

    Job Summary

    • Identifies the needs of community-based organizations systems of care and determines appropriate course of technical assistance necessary to implement evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions.
    • Provides technical assistance for community-based organizations to aid them in determining their goal of integration of tobacco treatment for their client population and their unique system of care.
    • Designs/conducts needs assessment surveys to gain understanding of community-based organizational staffs knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs around commercial tobacco. This assessment then drives the development, implementation, and evaluation of tailored education plans on tobacco control for each community-based organization across the state.
    • Designs/delivers training of multiple types of providers on evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions across the state. These trainings vary depending on the providers scope of practice and are tailored to meet the specific needs of the community-based organization and the provider.
    • Manages schedule to provide support for ongoing meetings.
    • Assists the Director with the management of grant budgets, proposals, and reports.
    • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships to effectively reach targeted populations statewide.
    • Coordinates with the Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, community-based organizations, and other statewide health agencies.
    • Plans and evaluates large scale training events (conferences, workshops, summits) for community-based organizations, including working with IU Continuing Education to provide continuing education (CE) credits.

    EDUCATION

    Required

    • Bachelors degree

    Preferred

    • Completion of nationally accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist course

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    • 2 years in a related field

    Working Conditions / Demands

    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
