This position will be for every other weekend - either Saturday/Sunday or Sunday/Monday 4p-12a.  

Occasional coverage throughout the week, usually on evenings 4p-12a or midnights 12a-8a - must also be able to pick up 1-2 on-call shifts a month. 

 

Purpose:

Responsible for receiving (non-911) emergency and non-emergency calls from the public/student/staff, assessing the situation, determining the appropriate response, and dispatching law enforcement units to incidents by utilizing radio communication and computer-aided dispatch systems, while maintaining accurate records of all calls and actions taken.

Essential Job Functions:

Essential job functions for a full-time police dispatcher include answering emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information from callers, prioritizing incidents, and dispatching police units via radio and computer. Other key duties involve maintaining real-time status of officers and resources, entering and retrieving data from various computer systems, and performing multiple tasks concurrently under pressure.

Providing emergency and non-emergency radio communication with Law Enforcement and coordinating with other agencies for Fire and/or EMS response or additional law enforcement personnel, as needed.

Monitor surveillance cameras, alarms, multiple radio channels, Rave, and respond to inquiries and/or requests from the public or law enforcement personnel.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

In the event of an emergency, be able to perform over-the-phone first aid and/or CPR, maintain a professional, courteous & polite demeanor, perform any additional duties assigned by Lincoln University Police Department and Staff. Be familiar with and carry out emergency evacuation procedures.

Dispatchers will occasionally be asked to work voluntary or mandated hours - including nights, weekends, and holidays.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

  1. Working knowledge of Outlook, Excel & Word (preferred)
  2. Ability to pass a background check (required)
  3. Ability to pass a drug test (required)
  4. A strong working knowledge of security operations & safety practices (preferred)
  5. Excellent surveillance and observation skills (preferred)
  6. Excellent communication skills – ability to speak clearly & calmly and effectively communicate with people in high-stress situations (desired)
  7. Type at least 35-40 wpm with 80% accuracy (Required)
  8. Ability to multi-task (required)
  9. Ability to handle high-stress situations and make quick decisions on your own (required)

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

  • High school diploma/GED or Equivalent (HiSet)
  • CPR/First Aid (desired)

Physical Demands:

  • Long periods of sitting and visual and/or strain from multiple monitors/tv screens
  • Potential for eye & neck strain due to prolonged use of computer screens & communication equipment
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to operate computers, computer equipment and other dispatch equipment
  • Specific vision abilities are needed for continuous work with multiple computer and tv screens – including close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • The role occasionally requires lifting and/or moving light objects – typically between 10-20 pounds
  • Occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting & reaching may be required to move between work areas or retrieve files or books
