Job Description

The Part-Time Evening Custodian ensures the upkeep, cleanliness, and safety of school buildings/grounds for students, staff, and community members by cleaning all assigned classrooms, bathrooms, offices and hallways each night and ensuring that all materials are restocked daily.

This a part-time position. We are looking for someone who can work from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish fixtures.
  • Clean windows and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Dust furniture, walls, window sills, and vents.
  • Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets as needed or as directed by supervisor.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors as needed or as directed by supervisor.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as ensuring doors are locked at all times and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and paths to dumpsters using snow blowers and snow shovels, and spread salt to ensure safety on sidewalks in cold weather.
  • Request supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties on time.
  • Clean up spills (including bodily fluids) safely and appropriately.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, and chairs to prepare facilities for events such as concerts and meetings.
  • Interact thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and professionally resolve conflict.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience performing janitorial duties
  • Experience in a school setting is highly preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members

Compensation

  • Hourly pay for this position starts at $18.18 per hour

Schedule

  • Members of the facilities team work year-round to ensure that the building is in excellent condition.
  • The facilities team has two additional full weeks of vacation in April and over the Winter holidays.
  • All other days that the building is open (including other school breaks, weather cancellations, etc.), facilities team members are expected to report to work.
