    Job Description

    The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach COM 117 Multimedia Storytelling Lecture and Lab during Fall 2026.

    This open section will meet throughout the semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30-4:50 (3 credits) and the associated labs will meet for the first five weeks on Tuesdays 5:00-6:20 and Thursday 6:30-7:50 (1 credit).

    Course Description: This class is a foundation course required for all majors in the Newhouse School. Students work collaboratively in teams of three to produce a variety of short films that tell stories that persuade, document, and entertain predefined audiences. Basic story structure is taught as well as how to write and edit stories for video production. Students learn digital photography, videography, and editing for sound and picture.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
    • Preference will be given to those with previous experience teaching a college level course.
    • Instructors for this class should have a working knowledge of story structure, script-writing, and production design.

    Job Specific Qualifications

    Instructors in this class should be familiar with story development and the production process for persuasive, non-fiction, and fiction storytelling as well as:

    • Able to evaluate student script writing and video editing for team projects.
    • Have basic skills in digital photography, video, and audio.
    • Be familiar with the primary software package used by the students in the class: Adobe Premiere.

    Responsibilities

    • Developing a syllabus.
    • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
    • Preparing for classes.
    • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
    • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to personally instruct the class in the assigned classroom on the days it is designated to meet.
    • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
    • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

    Tools/Equipment

    • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
