The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is looking for an individual to teach TRF 451/651 Directing on Mondays 2:15-5:00 in the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

Course Description: TRF 451/651 is the study and practice of the art of motion picture directing for film and single camera television content. Emphasis is on developing skills necessary to create festival-quality short works with public impact.

This course explores the director's role in filmmaking and single-camera production. You'll develop your creative voice through short exercises and a final project, while mastering the essential skills of creative leadership from motivating collaborators to delivering projects on time and on budget. The course examines cinematic styles, visualization techniques, directing theories, and the work of master directors, giving you both the practical tools and creative vision to lead compelling productions.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

Instructor should have at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in the communications field. Substantial background in film and/or television directing.

Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
