    Description

    The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach MND 604 Introduction to Data Journalism during the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

    Class meets in person on Mondays and Wednesdays 3:45pm-5:05pm.

    Course Description: This class is a hands-on introduction to data journalism, including data collection, data visualizations, data analysis, how to use data in journalistic stories, and other related skills.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
    • Instructors should offer evidence of their experience using data in journalism, including examples of reporting and writing.
    • They should have experience with and expertise in Google Sheets, Data Wrapper, pivot tables, Excel, and data visualizations, as well as with handling datasets.
    • Experience teaching at a college level is a plus.

    Responsibilities

    • Developing a syllabus.
    • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
    • Preparing for classes.
    • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
    • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
    • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
    • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

    Tools/Equipment

    • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
