The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is looking for an individual to teach TRF 453/653 Short-Form Production on Tuesdays/Thursdays 3:30-4:50 in the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

Course Description: Techniques of shortform moving image media such as commercials, promos, music videos, show openings, special effects, and high impact packaging.

This course is an intermediate production course covering the introduction to the theory and practice related to multimedia shortform production. Shortform production encompass a wide range of specialized program niches: commercials, music videos, on-air promos, identity packages; program opens; to name a few. As effective shortform works elicit a variety of impressions and communicate important information about their subject matter the instructor of this class must effectively teach students to use of all elements of communication design: cinematography and videography; graphics and animation; music and sound effects; and editing technique. The class will identify and explore these various elements and their use in effective communication.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. Instructor should have at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in the communications field.

Job Specific Qualifications

Substantial background in shortform production in the communications field.

Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
