The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach SMC 500 Performance for Sports Media on Tuesdays/Thursdays 2:00pm-3:20pm in the Fall 2026 semester. (3 credits)

This class focuses on critical voice and on-camera performance skills. Emphasis is on developing and improving an authoritative and conversational delivery for sports reporting on set, in packages, interviews, and live in remote locations. Students will engage in oral and written exercises to strengthen the foundation for developing a relaxed, natural, conversational, and professional-sounding delivery. This course will present the theory and practice of effective sports announcing and performance procedures that must be used when the medium of radio and television broadcasting is used to communicate with mass audiences. Students will develop sports broadcast copy analysis skills that will enable them to communicate at various presentational levels as required by different script styles and formats.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Experience and in on-air performance, media and/or reporting preferred.

Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
