ROLEWe are seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to support the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) District of South Carolina. Your scope of work focuses on providing comprehensive docketing and legal assistance, ensuring efficient management of case tracking, record-keeping, and statistical data reporting.This is a part-time opportunity in which we'll provide competitive pay, job stability, and security.Apply today!RESPONSIBILITIESServe as a source of procedural, systemic, and substantive information on all aspects of docketingRecommend office procedure revisions to improve docketing, expedite case processing, and ensure accuracyReview reports to identify recurring errorsTrain new employees in the operation and use of the case tracking systemAdvise other docketing personnel on appropriate codes for unprecedented casesExplain the operation of the system and the importance of timely information to both new AUSAs and support staffExtract requested statistical data on a regularly scheduled or ad hoc basisUse automation, statistical, and report-writing techniques to create reliable data and analyses based on needsMaintain and extract data from automated docket databasesInput new information to the databases and recommend improved office procedures to enhance docket functionDevelop and maintain automated records for criminal or civil cases from referral to closureRecognize data elements that are missing and provide missing data as necessaryProvide missing information frequently requiring technical research in files or legal reference materialReview incoming cases to route them to the appropriate office division as directed by the USAOCoordinate changes to the records schedule with the agency records officer and local program managerManage records with relevant officials, administrators, managers, auditors, inspectors, and special media officersServe as a USAO technical expert in docketing, independently maintaining automated records for civil or criminal casesUse specialized knowledge of litigation processes, court proceedings, legal documents, terminology, and proceduresReceive case status calls from clients, courts, office staff, law offices, attorneys, and individualsRetrieve information either from the automated database using query routines or from hard copy reportsAssist legal assistants and other USAO staff in obtaining and interpreting database informationProvide ongoing instruction on docket processing requirementsTrain newly assigned employees in the docket functionProduce a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applicationsEnsure correspondence is properly formatted with correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammarKNOWLEDGE & SKILLSProficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)Knowledge of litigation processes, court proceedings, legal documents, terminology, and proceduresKnowledge of Federal Civil and Criminal Codes and rules for docketingKnowledge of the Federal Rules of Appellate ProcedureStrong communication and organizational skillsBACKGROUNDExperience in administrative work, litigation processes, and court proceedingsExperience in docketing preferredExperience with legal documents, terminology, and proceduresEDUCATIONAssociate's degree or 2 years of continued higher educationBachelor's degree preferredLOCATIONColumbia, SC 29201TELEWORKMay be availableCLEARANCEU.S. citizenship required as it supports the U.S. federal governmentCLIENTDepartment of Justice (DOJ)TRAVELTravel is not requiredWORK HOURS15-20 hours per weekEMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATIONEmployment Classification Eligibility - NonexemptRELOCATIONNot eligible for relocation benefitsOTHER CONSIDERATIONSApplicants will be subject to a background investigation.
