Francis Marion University invites applications for a Part-Time Lifeguard position. Under limited supervision, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of Francis Marion University students, employees, and guests utilizing the outdoor pool facility. The successful candidate must be certified, dependable, organized, self-motivated, confident, and flexible.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Observe and oversee the activities of swimmers by continuously scanning the pool and surrounding deck areas.
  • Enforce pool rules, safety regulations, and facility guidelines while maintaining order and discipline.
  • Take preventive safety measures and remain calm, professional, and composed during emergencies or challenging situations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and consistent application of all pool safety rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Rescue distressed swimmers and provide emergency first aid, CPR, and other lifesaving services as needed.
  • Maintain the swimming pool facility by:
  • Opening the pool for scheduled operating hours
  • Setting up umbrellas and chairs
  • Performing lifeguard duties throughout shifts
  • Cleaning and organizing the pool deck area
  • Storing umbrellas and rearranging deck furniture at closing
  • Secure and close the pool facility at the end of operating hours.

FMU Requirements:

Must have a current Red Cross, YMCA or Jeff Ellis and Associates lifeguard certification. Must have current first aid and CPR certifications. Weekend availability

Normal working hours: Weekday shift, weekends as needed

Salary: $13.00 per hour

Job dates: May 25, 2026 - August 22, 2026

  • Note: This is a temporary, part time position, and it is not covered by the state grievance policy. The duration of the position will depend upon the needs of the Student Life Office.
