The Position

The PA/NP provides high‑quality, student‑centered primary care in a small, collaborative college health clinic. This role focuses on acute care, wellness, preventive services, and health education for a diverse undergraduate population. The ideal candidate is comfortable practicing independently within their scope, enjoys working with young adults, and values a holistic, educational approach to care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for common acute and chronic conditions seen in a college health setting (e.g., respiratory infections, minor injuries, dermatologic concerns, GI issues, mental health concerns within scope).
  • Perform physical exams, including sports, travel, and employment physicals.
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, point‑of‑care testing).
  • Prescribe medications in accordance with state regulations and collaborative practice agreements.
  • Provide sexual and reproductive health services, including STI testing/treatment, contraception counseling, and pregnancy testing.
  • Offer health education, counseling, and preventive care tailored to college‑aged students.
  • Collaborate with clinic nurses, administrative staff, and supervising physician (if required by state law).
  • Maintain accurate, timely electronic health records and documentation participate in quality improvement, policy development, and campus wellness initiatives as needed.
  • Support public health responsibilities such as immunization compliance, outbreak response, and health promotion campaigns.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic studies and laboratory tests. Combines medical history, physical examination and diagnostic test data to arrive at a working diagnosis. Formulates a plan of treatment for management of specified illnesses. Documents complete, accurate, and confidential data in the health record.
  • Refers patients to college physicians, outside specialists, counseling services or other appropriate providers when necessary.
  • Practices in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and state laws to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty and staff.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current unrestricted licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Virginia.
  • National certification (NCCPA for PAs; AANP/ANCC for NPs).
  • DEA registration or eligibility.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Experience in primary care, urgent care, family medicine, internal medicine, or adolescent medicine.
