Job Description

The City of Raleigh is looking for a part-time Planner to join our Planning and Development department. This role will work alongside colleagues on the long-range planning team on Raleigh's Next Comprehensive Plan, a major project that will impact how the city grows and develops over the next 25 years.

The ideal candidate will be organized and self-directed with strong communication skills. To thrive in this role, the candidate will enjoy thinking about planning issues, collaborating with colleagues across the organization, and engaging with residents across the city. In this role, you have an opportunity to contribute to a once-in-a-generation project that will set the future direction for planning in a rapidly growing city. You will have hands-on experience working with tenured colleagues, and leaders in their respective fields.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

This position will primarily support the development of Raleigh's Next Comprehensive Plan. There will also be opportunities to work on special projects to support the public engagement and research work of the division. Attendance at occasional evening and weekend meetings is desired. Specific tasks include:

  • Coordinating logistics for a range of public engagement events

  • Providing communications and administrative support for a staff advisory group

  • Working with communications staff to develop promotional materials

  • Collaborating with other team members to synthesize and integrate public input into policy

Typical Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Bachelors Degree in Planning, Urban Planning, Public Administration, or related field and 1 year of planning experience in an area relevant to the department to which assigned

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Additional Information

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of project management

  • Principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative research

  • Principles and applications of critical thinking and analysis

  • Best practices, trends and emerging technologies

  • Principles and techniques of effective oral presentations

  • Customer service principles

  • Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications

  • Relevant software applications including, but not limited to MS Office Suite, Adobe Suite, and ArcGIS

Skill in:

  • Researching industry trends, solutions and best practices

  • Gathering data, analyzing findings and applying logic and reason

  • Coordinating deadlines and prioritizing competing demands

  • Authoring and preparing original reports, technical documents and presentations

Ability to:

  • Engage with community stakeholders and disseminate information effectively

  • Manage projects effectively and efficiently

  • Maintain and update project reports and data

  • Effectively convey and exchange information

  • Work individually and within a group setting

  • Prioritize competing demands

Work Environment and Physical Effort:

Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in an office or similar indoor environment. Employees may occasionally work in an outdoor environment or in a vehicle.
