Description

The City of Anaheim is seeking Part Time Police Cadets to perform a variety of routine law enforcement functions to support the Anaheim Police Department. This is a work training program for college students who are preparing for a career in law enforcement. The ideal candidate is seeking a long-term career in law enforcement.

Incumbents in this position will learn to perform law enforcement and technical support duties in accordance with established procedures. Assignments may be made within any division of the Police Department.

This is a part time position with no minimum number of hours guaranteed. Candidates must be available to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Interact with the public on the phone and in person; obtain information from victims and witnesses; complete police reports.

Assist with clerical duties, file paperwork; non-physical contact with inmates.

Assist with transportation and tracking of evidence; assist with simple photography.

Perform fingerprinting and process applicants; enter and retrieve data from computer; type and file documents; vehicle shuttling and other errands.

Answer telephone lines, utilize internal computer systems.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience: High School Diploma or G.E.D; must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) semester units at an accredited college or university and maintain a minimum of a 2.0 or "C" grade point average. Minimum age of 18 years required.

Knowledge of: standard office procedures, typing skills, and basic computer skills; basic principles and procedures of filing and record keeping; customer service; writing and basic report preparation; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; principles and practices of law enforcement; general criminal justice processes; applicable criminal and traffic laws.

Ability to: perform a variety of basic law enforcement functions; write clear and concise reports; enforce parking regulations and issue citations; assist with crime scene security; safely operate and maintain assigned equipment and/or vehicles; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, outside agencies and the general public; deal diplomatically with the public under stressful situations at all times.

License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License by date of appointment.

CPR and First Aid Training - A certificate is required within 12 months of the hire date. The time required to train will be paid at the employee's base rate.

Bilingual Pay: Speaking level: $0.90 per hour worked. Speaking and Reading and/or Writing level: $1.10 per hour worked.

Training Pay: Employees who are temporarily assigned as a primary trainer to new police cadets shall receive a five percent (5%) pay differential above their base rate of pay for each hour training duties are actually performed.

Employees of the Anaheim Police Department must be permanent and full-time residents of the State of California and live within a one hundred (100) mile radius of the City of Anaheim.

The selection process includes, but is not limited to, a written exam, oral interview, background investigation, polygraph examination, a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening.

The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.

Please review the following common disqualifiers. If any items listed pertain to you, you will be automatically disqualified in the background investigation. You may, at this time, want to screen yourself and withdraw prior to starting the recruitment process.

  • Any illegal use, sales, or possession of a drug classified as an opiate (heroin, opium, etc.) or PCP.
  • Any use of cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) within five years of date of application.
  • Any illegal use of anabolic steroids within three years of date of application.
  • A pattern or history of irresponsibility as evidenced by debt collections, civil judgments, failure to pay, late payments, etc.
  • Two or more at-fault traffic collisions within three years of the date of application.
  • Conviction of a hit-and run offense.
  • Any drivers license suspension within five years of date of application.
  • Conviction of a felony crime.
  • Conviction of any misdemeanor crime within five years of application.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of any misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence, sexual-related offenses or crimes against children.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of a theft or larceny crime.

The following may result in disqualification:

  • Use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) previous to five years of application.
  • Prior nitrous oxide use.
  • Illegal use of anabolic steroids previous to three years of application.
  • Illegal use of a hypodermic needle/ syringe.
  • A bankruptcy within the past three years of date of application.
  • More than one moving violation in the past 12 months, and/or three or more moving citations within the past three years, and/or five or more moving citations within the past five years of date of application.
