Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students¿ health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer various programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Job Summary

Recreational Sports facilities have tens of thousands of uses each month, so it is the role of the RMFRs to constantly evaluate the facilities and to mitigate any potential risks or hazards. This role offers a great opportunity to stay active, develop leadership and communication skills, and become part of a supportive campus community. A person in this role also gains valuable experience in customer service, communication, teamwork, and attention to detail skills that are transferable to any future career.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• In the event of an accident or injury, RMFRs are trained to provide rapid, high-quality medical care.
• Ensures that evacuations are completed in a timely and orderly fashion.
• Ensures safety and provide first aid care for any ill or injured participants in our facilities.
• Administers care during accidents and emergencies in accordance with Recreational Sports policies and training.
• Maintains current certifications (e.g., CPR, EMT) and complete required safety training.
• Accurately documents and reports accidents, injuries, and unusual incidents to designated staff.
• Follows infection control procedures and assist in maintaining a clean, safe environment, including proper cleanup of bodily fluids.
• Supports emergency evacuation procedures during events such as tornadoes, fires, or earthquakes, following established protocols.
• Conducts routine checks of facility entry points and report any security or safety concerns promptly.
• Assists other team members as requested.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

• General knowledge at the high school level

Preferred

• Some college

LISCENSES AND CERTIFICATES

• Currently registered as an EMR, EMT (or higher) with the State of Indiana or National Registry Upon Date of Hire.
• Current certification in CPR, Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross Upon Date of Hire.

SKILLS

Required

• High degree of personal integrity and responsibility.
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, using good judgment and common sense with a thorough understanding of the principles of emergency medical care.
• Ability to work efficiently and interact in a constructive and professional manner with other employees, and public safety personnel.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with participants, family members, bystanders, and the public in such a manner as to reflect positively on Recreational Sports.

Working Conditions / Demands

The person in this position must be able to move and transport a backpack up to 10 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance. This position requires the ability to ascend/descend stairs and remain stationary for extended periods of time. The role also involves traveling distances of up to one-quarter mile.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana.

This is an in-person position.

Onsite work will take place at the following campus recreation facilities, depending on the needs of each sporting event:

• Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC)
• Bill Garrett Fieldhouse
• Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex

Advertised Salary

$17.50 per hour

Work Hours

Minimum of 8 hours required, ability to work more but not to exceed 29 hours per week across all campus positions.

Early morning, evening, and weekend shifts may be required.
