Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled Pathologists' Assistant to join a hospital-based pathology laboratory. This role is responsible for assisting pathologists with the gross examination, dissection, and preparation of surgical specimens while ensuring compliance with laboratory quality and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically proficient, and committed to delivering accurate and timely pathology support.
Responsibilities
- Assist pathologists with the gross examination of surgical specimens.
- Perform gross dissection, tissue sampling, and specimen preparation according to established protocols.
- Ensure accurate handling, labeling, and documentation of surgical specimens.
- Utilize Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to manage specimen tracking and reporting.
- Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, and other applicable laboratory standards.
- Collaborate with pathologists and laboratory staff to support timely and accurate diagnostic services.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
- Follow all laboratory safety, infection prevention, and regulatory guidelines.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program, or an equivalent program recognized by the applicable state education department.
Certifications
- ASCP Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA-ASCP) required.
- Completion of an AAPA-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program/fellowship preferred.
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience as a Pathologists' Assistant.
- Experience working in a hospital pathology laboratory.
- Hands-on experience with gross examination, tissue dissection, and specimen preparation.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of CAP and CLIA laboratory standards.
- Experience using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
