Position Summary / Career Interest:

M - F 8:30am - 5pm

The Pathology Clerk is responsible for data entry of a variety of information into the Hospital Information System (HIS) and the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and archives materials for the Pathology Department including blocks, slides, and reports. This position will also assist with the management of surgical consult cases and send-out testing.

The Pathology Clerk scans completed reports into the Electronic Medical Record; glass slides into a scanner for Digital Imaging, and interacts with clinicians, pathologists, technical staff, nurses, patients and couriers.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Performs data entry of patient demographics, insurance information, and diagnostic codes in both hospital and laboratory information systems, according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Files blocks and slides in numerical order and maintains historical materials in a manner that is quickly retrievable.
  • Accessions cases for consultation. Ensures all slides, blocks, and paperwork match.
  • Correctly identifies, obtains and enters patient demographics.
  • Scans medical reports into a digital archiving system. Scans glass slides into a scanner for Digital Imaging.
  • Answers telephone and provides customer service and follow-up on requests.
  • Packages Pathology materials for mailing to outside facilities.
  • Maintains activity flow required for accurate and quality specimen reporting.
  • Demonstrates technical competence with LIS, EMR, and PC. Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures, and participates in inspection readiness.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
