Patient Care Technician

Status: Full Time (36 hours/week

Shift: Varies & every other weekend and rotating holidays

Position Summary: Provides direct patient care and support under the direction of a Registered Nurse, assisting with activities of daily living, patient procedures, monitoring, and treatment-related tasks while promoting a safe and compassionate patient experience.

  • Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, repositioning, and transportation.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, weights, intake and output, blood glucose testing, specimen collections, telemetry application, and Foley care.
  • Support patient care activities including simple dressings, bladder scans, restraint application/removal, and patient transport.
  • Observe and report changes in patient condition to the RN.
  • Assist with respiratory, physical, and cardiopulmonary therapies as directed.
  • Provide patient and family instruction under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the medical record.
  • Respond to call lights, answer telephones, deliver meal trays, and assist with unit-based activities.
  • Maintain equipment and report malfunctions promptly.
  • Follow all safety, infection prevention, and patient care policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and respect in all interactions.
  • Participate in department quality initiatives and continuous learning activities.

Advanced Skills

Based on department needs, Patient Care Technicians may be trained and maintain competency in one or more of the following:

  • Phlebotomy/venipuncture

  • 12-lead EKG

  • Basic arrhythmia recognition

  • Peripheral IV removal

  • Foley catheter removal

  • NG tube clamping and removal

  • Straight catheterization

  • Point-of-care testin

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • One of the following:

  • 1 year of healthcare experience, OR

  • 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion, OR

  • Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR

  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training.

  • Successful completion of eRecord training.

  • EMT, Paramedic, or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
