Job Summary

The Department of Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (VVWH) Nursing Services is a full-scope Perinatal care hospital at University of Michigan Health.

We are seeking a temporary Patient Care Technician Postpartum to provide high-quality, compassionate patient care under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse in the Postpartum Unit. The Patient Care Technician assists with activities of daily living, monitors and documents patient information, supports the care of postpartum mothers and newborns, and contributes to a safe, clean, and patient-centered environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent communication skills, compassion, teamwork, and a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care while adhering to established policies, procedures, and standards of practice.

• Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the care of postpartum mothers and newborns assigned to the Mother-Baby Unit.

• Provide support in maintaining a safe, supportive, and family-centered environment that promotes the physical, emotional, and educational needs of postpartum patients and their families.

• Assist the Registered Nurse in providing routine postpartum and newborn care, including supporting maternal recovery, newborn care activities, patient comfort, and mobility while ensuring patient safety.

• Support breastfeeding and infant care initiatives by assisting with patient needs and reinforcing a family-centered approach to care, as directed by the Registered Nurse.

• Ensure the efficient cleaning, stocking, organization, and management of postpartum equipment, procedural instruments, and patient care supplies to support unit operations.

• Perform a wide range of physical activities, including standing for extended periods, transporting and positioning patients, infants, and equipment, and frequently positioning oneself to provide safe and effective patient care.

• Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team while following direction and prioritizing patient care responsibilities.

• Communicate with patients, families, and healthcare team members in a welcoming, respectful, caring, and professional manner.

• Understand and demonstrate the principles of Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC), including Respect and Dignity, Information Sharing, Participation, and Collaboration, in all aspects of postpartum and newborn care.

Responsibilities*

Basic Function and Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the care of postpartum mothers and newborns, providing support to promote safe recovery, infant well-being, and a positive family-centered experience.
• Assist in maintaining a safe, supportive, and family-centered environment that meets the physical, emotional, and educational needs of postpartum patients and their families.
• Assist the Registered Nurse with routine postpartum and newborn care activities, including maternal comfort measures, infant care, mobility assistance, and activities of daily living within the scope of the role.
• Support breastfeeding and infant feeding initiatives by assisting with patient needs, reinforcing education provided by the Registered Nurse, and promoting maternal-infant bonding.
• Coordinate and assist with newborn procedures performed on the postpartum unit, including newborn circumcisions, by preparing the procedure area, managing procedural instruments and supplies, and ensuring equipment is cleaned and restocked following procedures.
• Perform delegated clinical and laboratory procedures for postpartum mothers and newborns, including specimen collection, specimen transport, and point-of-care testing as assigned and within scope of practice.
• Perform delegated tasks related to the maintenance, cleaning, stocking, and readiness of patient care equipment, emergency supplies, and routine patient care supplies throughout the postpartum unit.
• Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring patient rooms and equipment are prepared to support safe, efficient transitions of care.
• Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and readiness of patient care spaces, procedure rooms, equipment, and supply areas to support high-quality patient care.
• Perform a wide range of physical activities, including standing and walking for extended periods, transporting and positioning postpartum patients, newborns, and equipment, and frequently positioning oneself to provide safe and effective patient care.
• Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively as an effective member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team while following direction and adapting to changing patient care priorities.
• Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members in a welcoming, caring, respectful, and professional manner.
• Understand and demonstrate the core principles of Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC), including Respect and Dignity, Information Sharing, Participation, and Collaboration, in all aspects of postpartum and newborn care.
• Identify opportunities to improve patient care processes and recommend changes that enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of postpartum and newborn services.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Required: High school diploma, GED or equivalent, ability to read and write

Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities which include moving, transporting and positioning patients and equipment as well as constantly positioning self to provide patient care and related duties.

Desired Qualifications*

• A minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting.
• Course work in an Allied Health field
• Certified as a Nurse Aide (CNA, Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), or Medical Assistant (CCMA)

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

• 7:00 p.m.- 7:30 a.m., 12-hour night shifts.

Per Diem/Temporary position requiring a minimum of two shifts per month

Additional Information

• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Participate in a patient care handoff with the off-going Patient Care Technician at the beginning of each shift to ensure continuity of care. Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to prioritize patient care activities and support efficient workflow throughout the shift.
• Verify and maintain accurate identification of postpartum mothers and newborns in accordance with hospital and unit policies, including during temporary separation and reunification.
• Promptly notify the Team Leader, Charge Nurse, or Registered Nurse of any changes in patient condition, safety concerns, equipment malfunctions, or other issues that may impact patient care.
• Communicate with patients, families, and visitors in a welcoming, respectful, caring, and professional manner. Explain procedures and routine care within the scope of the role and refer clinical questions to the Registered Nurse as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient information on room whiteboards, as directed, to support communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
• Assist in orienting and supporting newly hired Patient Care Technicians by serving as a preceptor, when assigned, and collaborating with unit educators to promote competency development and adherence to unit standards.
• Demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing patient care needs and assist with unit activities to support safe, efficient, and family-centered postpartum and newborn care.

Supervision: reports to the Clinical Nursing Director and Clinical Supervisors. Functional supervision is provided by the Charge Nurse, Team Leader, and/or Registered Nurse on the mother-Baby/Postpartum Unit.
