Shift Information:

Typical shifts are 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM or 6:00 PM - 6:30 AM. Start and end times may vary based on department needs, with flexibility due to casual status.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, including assistance with procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, and repositioning patients.

  • Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN and provide ongoing feedback regarding patient care.

  • Perform UPMC core nursing assistant duties, including:

  • Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, weights, intake & output

  • Specimen collection and Foley care

  • Telemetry monitor application/reapplication

  • Patient safety indicators and hospital-acquired condition prevention

  • Demonstrate competency in additional unit-based skills, including at least four of the following:

  • Phlebotomy/venipuncture

  • 12-lead EKG

  • Simple dressings

  • Foley catheter removal

  • Bladder scan

  • Straight catheterization

  • Point-of-care testing

  • Peripheral IV removal

  • Assist with patient transport ("ticket to ride" and other unit-based activities such as responding to call lights, answering phones, and passing meal trays.

  • Ensure proper functioning of equipment and report malfunctions promptly.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the medical record per established procedures.

  • Provide patient and family education under RN direction.

  • Apply, monitor, and remove restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.

  • Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team and foster professional, respectful working relationships.

  • Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and commitment to patient care and team collaboration.

  • Adhere strictly to all UPMC policies, procedures, and safety standards, including infection control and standard precautions.

  • Support unit initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and departmental changes.

  • Identify learning needs, seek feedback, and actively participate in professional development.

  • Prioritize tasks effectively and request assistance when needed to ensure safe and efficient care delivery.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Must meet one of the following:

  • One (1 year of general healthcare experience; or

  • Six (6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant or CNA, with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion (for those with less than one year of experience; or

  • Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare training program, with completion of at least one clinical rotation; or

  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician (PCT class required.

  • Successful completion of eRecord training required.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Basic Life Support (BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR certification required (must meet American Heart Association standards, including both didactic and skills components within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS certification preferred.
  • Act 34 clearance required.
