Summary/Objective:
Hospital Patient Porters serve as frontline ambassadors for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, ensuring Veterans and their families receive exceptional, compassionate, and safe support from the moment they arrive on campus. Porters provide navigation assistance, mobility support, patient transport, and general customer service across multiple clinical and administrative areas. The role requires consistent professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to respond effectively in both routine and emergent situations.
Job Duties:
Greet Veterans and visitors; provide navigation, information, and a consistent positive experience.
Assist patients entering/exiting vehicles; load/unload wheelchairs and mobility devices.
Transport patients via wheelchair or escort to clinics, imaging, inpatient units, prosthetics, and specialty centers.
Support discharges by escorting patients to pharmacy, equipment pick‑up, and family pick‑up locations.
Provide parking lot assistance, including shuttle/cart boarding and guidance.
Respond to emergencies (CPR, Heimlich, seizure precautions, basic first aid).
Transport labs, including urgent STAT specimens; support Code Blue and DAART responses.
Perform postmortem transport to the morgue.
Use VISTA to verify appointment information.
Maintain daily logs, rosters, and required documentation in OES office space.
Uphold patient dignity, privacy, safety, and VA conduct standards.
Report incidents, accidents, complaints, and property concerns promptly.
Maintain professional uniform appearance and visible PIV badge.
Comply with VA smoke‑free campus rules and drug/alcohol‑free workplace requirements.
