For more than 50 years, NMHSI-a nonprofit community health center-has proudly served communities across Northwest Michigan. Our Traverse City Clinic is seeking a friendly, detail-oriented English/Spanish Bilingual Patient Registration Specialist to join our team. In this role, you'll help ensure our English- and Spanish-speaking patients receive welcoming, accessible, and high-quality care from their very first interaction with our clinic.
About the Role
The Bilingual Patient Registration Specialist plays an essential role in delivering exceptional customer service and supporting smooth clinic operations. This position serves as the first point of contact for many patients and is responsible for patient check-in and check-out, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, assisting with paperwork, answering phones, and providing a warm, professional experience for every patient. Working closely with providers and clinic staff, this role helps ensure efficient, patient-centered care while supporting communication with both English- and Spanish-speaking patients.

Key Responsibilities
- Register new and returning patients, including entering and updating demographic and insurance information.
- Communicate professionally with patients in both English and Spanish, in person and over the phone.
- Assist patients with registration forms, income updates, enrollment documents, release of information forms, and other required paperwork.
- Direct patients to the appropriate provider or service area.
- Answer phones in a courteous, professional manner and relay messages accurately.
- Schedule medical, dental, and insurance enrollment appointments.
- Make appointment reminder and confirmation calls and fill open appointment slots when cancellations occur.
- Collect copays, fees, and payments at the time of service and accurately record transactions in the practice management system.
- Explain the sliding fee scale, copays, payment expectations, and available services to patients.
- Support patient satisfaction initiatives and contribute to efficient clinic operations as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
Requirements
- Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
- Strong customer service, organizational, and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining professionalism and compassion.
