About The Role:

The Patient Safety Consultant will lead, conduct and/or facilitate multidisciplinary activities to ensure the safest and highest quality patient care outcomes for Children's National Health System. Responsible for managing and executing patient safety education and prevention programs to promote a culture of safety . Facilitates an environment that prioritizes patient safety , manages sensitive patient safety information in a professional manner and strives to achieve excellence in communication and collaboration. Actively participates in safety related goal attainment and supports partner departments in other ways as needed.

Bachelor's Degree (Required)

Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience

3 years Healthcare experience or exposure (Required)

2 years' experience in safety/quality. (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge

Must have knowledge of patient safety processes.

Must be detail oriented, analytic, and effectively lead and manage ongoing projects.

Must be able to manage and prioritize organizational and departmental needs

Must be able to manage projects and priorities independently and multitask as needed

Must take initiative in identifying departmental and organizational needs for patient safety

Must be proficient or have the ability to quickly acquire skills in cause analysis, model for improvement, and lean.

Must be able to lead multiple projects, facilitate multidisciplinary teams, manage sensitive information, work independently, have good judgement, excellent organizational skills, and negotiate conflict.

Must be proficient in MS Office Suite, possess excellent interpersonal skills and excellent oral/written communication skills.

Prefer healthcare exposure/experience, prefer patient safety exposure/experience.

Functional Accountabilities

Patient Safety Program

  • Provides consultation, team facilitation and leadership to clinical, non-clinical, medical, administrative and interdisciplinary teams. Serves as an internal consultant responsible for assisting with the integration of safety principles within the organizations culture.
  • Supports cause analysis through facilitation, planning, coordination, and project management
  • Supports teams in executing, sustaining, and spreading effective change as well as completing cause analysis, pro-active risk assessments, and other patient safety activities aimed to increase patient safety.
  • Plans and implements activities to foster engagement in patient safety program such as safety rounds, grand rounds, safety presentations, National Patient Safety Week Celebration, safety culture survey , and others.
  • Supports coaches and departmental safety/quality representatives.
  • Ensures compliance with mandatory patient safety activities.
  • Serves on appropriate quality/safety/service committees.

Education and Facilitation

  • Manages the patient safety education programs (i.e. error prevention training, leadership training, etc.).
  • Educates and coaches multidisciplinary teams in patient safety techniques and tools.
  • Uses data to determine educational needs and make recommendations for program content, then develops education plans to close
  • identified knowledge and performance gaps.
  • Serves as an internal subject matter expert and educational resource.

Data Management

  • Reviews and facilitates follow-up to safety events.
  • Uses data from safety event reports to create an integrated safety improvement strategy.
  • Analyzes data for trends; develops reports for dissemination internally and externally.
  • Reviews processes and analyzes and interprets results of patient safety assessments (e.g., Culture Survey, Leapfrog Survey);
  • Analyze, manage, and maintain internal and external databases.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and prepares data for submission (e.g. Leapfrog Survey)
  • encourages use of data and results to foster improvement.

Project Management

  • Independently manages projects that support patient safety , culture, and outcomes.
  • Prioritizes projects, manages timelines, and ensures project goals and outcomes are met
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement that support patient safety and reduce adverse outcomes, errors.
  • Uses performance improvement methods and tools to plan and progress projects and initiatives.
  • Effectively coordinates project to ensure successful implementation

Professional Development

  • Connects with external safety and quality organizations to contribute knowledge and learn from others.
  • Seeks out education and professional development opportunities
  • Submits abstracts on patient safety initiatives.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
