The Patient Services Assistant performs nursing, phlebotomy and patient care tasks under the general supervision of a professional nurse. Collects and processes blood and other laboratory specimens, performs EKG tracings, and maintains related records. Communicates and collaborates with other health care team members while attending to personal needs, safety, and comfort of patients.
Performs a variety of other duties to assist staff, such as transporting patients and maintaining equipment and supplies.
Demonstrates competency in performing clinical care and assessing appropriate behavior of newborns and adults.
Provides personal care assistance to infants and adults consistent with the specific standards of care; provides basic teaching to adult patients, including bathing, dressing, and feeding of infants; assists with technical procedures;
Obtains blood specimens on adults by performing venipunctures and skin punctures on inpatients and outpatients and obtains heel-sticks on newborns in normal nursery.
Performs specimen collection and record keeping associated with phlebotomy as well as reports results.
Performs electrocardiograms on adults.
Provides support for unit-based escorts/transports of patients, specimens, supplies and equipment and other resources.
Prepares/checks equipment and supplies and utilizes resources and materials in a safe and efficient manner.
Organizes work, communicates changes, sets priorities in collaboration with staff nurse and/or Nurse Manager-Designee based on patient care needs and unit activity.
Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team.
Supports unit-based Quality Assurance activities and maintains hospital and departmental philosophy/policies/procedures, objectives, clinical care standards, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's comfort and privacy and responds in an appropriate and courteous manner to verbal and non-verbal needs of patients, family and visitors, and hospital personnel.
Integrates service excellence standards in all day-to-day activities and communications with customers and responds to their feedback by direct action and/or communications with management staff.
Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit-care data.
Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
Performs other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.
High school graduate or equivalent and completion of an approved Nursing Assistant Training program and phlebotomy course required. Must maintain a current R. I. Department of Health CNA license and CPR certification, and must hold certificate of completion of phlebotomy training program. Good telephone, interpersonal and writing skills essential, along with demonstrated ability to accurately relate technical information. Must be at least 18 years old. Must be proficient in the English language.
