Patient Services Representative - Gastroenterology Associates

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday
  • 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Start time may vary earlier when assigned to patient registration duties
  • No evenings, weekends, or holidays

Daily Duties

  • Schedule office appointments and procedures in a high-volume call center environment
  • Provide face-to-face scheduling assistance for patients in the office
  • Register patients and accurately update demographic and insurance information
  • Manage and work assigned work queues to support patient access and scheduling needs
  • Deliver excellent customer service while assisting patients by phone and in person
  • Coordinate appointments and procedures to ensure efficient patient care and provider schedules

Responsibilities

  • Provide a warm, welcoming experience for all patients and visitors.
  • Guide patients through the use of self-arrival technology or assist with check-in at the front desk based on patient preference.
  • Collect copayments and other applicable patient payments at the point of service.
  • Confirm and update patient demographic, insurance, and registration information during check-in and checkout.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
  • Coordinate or connect patients with appropriate resources to schedule ancillary services.
  • Help patients navigate the healthcare system by providing clear instructions and support to ensure continuity of care.
  • Follow up on unresolved patient questions or concerns to ensure a positive patient experience.
  • Demonstrate service recovery principles by addressing concerns promptly and taking appropriate action to exceed patient expectations and support the UPMC Experience.
  • Enroll patients in the Biometrics (fingerprint recognition program and educate them on its benefits.
  • Promote the MyUPMC patient portal and assist patients with registration and navigation when appropriate.
  • Educate patients on financial responsibilities and connect them with advocacy and financial assistance resources as needed.
  • Verify insurance coverage and benefits through online verification systems and carrier inquiries.
  • Obtain required patient and family signatures for consent to treatment and financial responsibility in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Appropriately triage and route incoming phone calls to clinical staff or other departments as needed.
  • Perform administrative duties, including scanning medical records, faxing documents, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Remain knowledgeable about the MyUPMC Patient Portal and confidently guide patients to ensure continued access to health information and care services.
  • Completion of high school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Experience with personal computer-based applications, other various office equipment and proficient typing skills are preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a medical / billing / fiscal or customer service function is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
