The Patient Transporter cares for patients under the direction of the Manager of Patient and Guest Relations. Responsible for the transportation of patients and patient related items within the organization. Assists with greeting of patients/visitors and transporting to requested area. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that follow Heart Behaviors.

Skills and Abilities

Essential Technical/Motor Skills

  • Speaks clearly, precise hand/eye coordination, manipulation of small items and equipment, answering telephones, copying, interpretation of equipment (oxygen flow meter).

Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians, staff, and visitors.
  • Responds to requests promptly and courteously.
  • Takes telephone messages correctly and delivers messages appropriately.
  • Complies with guidelines for dress code and personal hygiene.

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Walking, pushing, pulling, restraining, and moving equipment, lifting 35 lbs.

Essential Mental Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, patient names, room numbers, understands verbal communication, organizational skills, short term memory, follows rules, adaptability to change, explain cause/effect in situations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

Essential Sensory Requirements

  • Visual skills to transport patients though the hospital, and to perform the QA functions.
  • Distinguish colors for sign of potential problems with patients and determination of color-coded signs indicating hazards.

Exposure to Hazards

  • Radiation, body fluids, needle sticks, possible neck, back limb injury should patient/items be handled inappropriately.
  • Occasionally would work near moving mechanical parts, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. Hazardous materials.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Attends in-service programs and continuing education classes as directed.
  • Follows department policies and procedures, works scheduled hours, yet is flexible to meet needs of the department.
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, cart, bed, or special cart. Patients may be transported while connected to I-Meds, oxygen, or portable suction. Able to assist/transfer patient's alone to/from bed, cart, or wheelchair. Transport isolation patients.
  • Notifies unit caregivers when patient returns to unit some monitors can be re-connected
  • Ability to prioritize tasks according to status of Stat, ASAP, or routine.
  • Maintains appropriate communication with patients, families, and staff throughout the organization. Must cope well in emergency conditions and handle stressful situations.
  • Cleans equipment as needed between patients per hospital standard.
  • Observes and reports any changes in patient's condition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • H.S. Diploma - Required

Work Experience

  • Previous hospital experience and/or familiarity with medical supplies and equipment - Preferred
  • Patient Experience - Preferred
  • Exceptional Customer service - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required within 90 Days
  • CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention - Required within 90 Days
  • Patient Safety Transfer - Required within 90 Days

Travel Requirements

  • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, cart, bed, or special cart. Patients may be transported while connected to I-Meds, oxygen, or portable suction. Able to assist/transfer patient's alone to/from bed, cart, or wheelchair. Transport isolation patients.
