OVERVIEW & PURPOSE:

This position performs responsible supervisory and specialized law enforcement work for the Iredell County Sheriffs Office. A Deputy Sheriff Sergeant serves as a first-line working supervisor and assists in directing deputies, detectives, or other assigned personnel while also performing sworn law enforcement duties.

Sergeants help plan daily operations, assign work, review reports, train and coach employees, handle more difficult calls or investigations, and serve in the absence of a Lieutenant or other supervisor. Sergeants may be assigned to patrol, investigations, civil process, training, community policing, ACE / ICE, or other units based on the operational needs of the Sheriffs Office.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises, directs, trains, coaches, and assists assigned deputies, detectives, or other personnel.
  • Establishes work priorities based on staffing, calls for service, equipment, workload, and operational needs.
  • Assigns work, monitors completion, and provides guidance on difficult calls, investigations, civil process issues, and other law enforcement matters.
  • Reviews reports, records, arrests, case files, and other documentation for accuracy, completeness, policy compliance, and legal sufficiency.
  • Approves leave requests, assists with scheduling, and helps maintain proper staffing coverage.
  • Responds to calls for service and may handle more difficult, sensitive, or high-risk incidents.
  • Serves as a working supervisor by performing patrol, investigative, civil, training, community policing, or other assigned duties.
  • Trains, counsels, mentors, and coaches employees on performance, professionalism, safety, and policy compliance.
  • May participate in or conduct performance evaluations, employee counseling, corrective action, and other supervisory documentation.
  • Serves in the absence of the Lieutenant or assigned supervisor when directed.
  • Coordinates with other divisions, agencies, court personnel, attorneys, victims, witnesses, and members of the public.
  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate reports, records, case files, schedules, training records, and related documentation.
  • Testifies in court and presents facts related to arrests, investigations, evidence, supervision, and other official duties.
  • Conducts or assists with public presentations, crime prevention programs, community outreach, and other Sheriffs Office events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.

SPECIALIZED ASSIGNMENTS

Sergeants may be assigned to specialized divisions, units, or program areas including, but not limited to:

  • Patrol
  • Civil Division
  • Criminal Investigations / Detective Division
  • Training
  • ACE / Aggressive Criminal Enforcement
  • ICE / Interstate Criminal Enforcement
  • Community Oriented Policing (COPS)
  • School Resource Officer or school-related assignments
  • Narcotics, Economic Crimes, Property Crimes, Special Victims, Domestic Violence, Crime Scene, or other investigative assignments
  • Lake Patrol, Court Security, Special Operations, K-9, or other assignments established by the Sheriff.

Assignment-specific responsibilities, training, certifications, schedules, and equipment requirements may be maintained in separate duty statements or unit procedures.

Assignment to a specialized unit does not change the employees underlying classification as Deputy Sheriff Sergeant.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of Sheriffs Office operations, policies, procedures, and legal processes.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, criminal investigations, civil process, search and seizure, arrest procedures, and court requirements.
  • Working knowledge of personnel policies, supervision, leadership, discipline, motivation, communication, and performance coaching.
  • Skill in the use of firearms, law enforcement equipment, defensive tactics, de-escalation, and emergency vehicle operation.
  • Skill in supervising, training, mentoring, and evaluating lower-level law enforcement personnel.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures to specific situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make quick, effective, and reasonable decisions in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form and to prepare accurate reports and records.
  • Ability to testify effectively in court.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, court officials, attorneys, victims, witnesses, and the

public.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE "REQUIREMENTS":

Graduation from High School and completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training. Considerable law enforcement experience required, including lead worker, supervisor, field training, investigative or equivalent experience.

ADDITIONAL "REQUIREMENTS":

Must be at least 20 years of age and possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License.

Certification by the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission as Law Enforcement Officer.

Must maintain all required training, qualifications, and certifications.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, call-outs, and on-call assignments as required.

May be required to obtain specialized training or certifications based on assignment, including supervisory training, instructor certification, field training officer, firearms, radar, civil process, investigations, crime scene, boat operation, community policing, or other assignment-specific training.

"PREFERRED" QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory training is preferred and may be required based on assignment or agency policy

Supplemental Information

HOURS

Sergeants may work rotating shifts, fixed shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, call-outs, and on-call assignments based on the operational needs of the Sheriffs Office. Work schedules may vary by assignment.
