This role is responsible for recording, reconciling, and reporting payroll activity within the General Ledger while maintaining strong internal controls and supporting financial reporting requirements.Acting as a bridge between detailed payroll data and the organization's financial statements, the Payroll Accountant ensures that wages, taxes, deductions, and employer-paid benefits are accurately reflected in financial records.Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Ledger & Financial AccountingPrepare and record payroll-related journal entries, including wages, taxes, and benefitsEnsure accurate and timely posting of payroll activity to the General LedgerSupport monthly, quarterly, and annual close processesAnalyze payroll-related expenses and variancesPerform reconciliations of payroll-related accounts (tax liabilities, clearing accounts, benefits)Ensure alignment between payroll reports, third-party data, and financial recordsInvestigate and resolve discrepanciesMaintain accurate supporting documentationCompliance & Audit SupportEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulationsReview payroll tax reporting and liabilities for accuracyPrepare audit schedules and supporting documentationSupport internal and external audit processesInternal Controls & GovernanceMaintain strong internal controls over payroll-related accounting processesEnsure appropriate segregation of duties and confidentialityReview payroll outputs for financial accuracy prior to postingIdentify and mitigate financial and compliance risksSystems & Process ImprovementPartner with HR and Payroll Operations to ensure accurate data flowIdentify opportunities for automation and process improvementsSupport system implementations and enhancementsQualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting or related field requiredMinimum of five years of payroll accounting or general ledger accounting experienceExperience in multi-entity or multi-state environments preferredKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesStrong understanding of payroll accounting, journal entries, and reconciliationsKnowledge of payroll tax regulations and financial reporting impactAdvanced Excel and ERP/payroll system experienceHigh attention to detail and analytical capabilityAbility to manage confidential data with discretionSuccess FactorsDelivers accurate and timely payroll-related financial reportingMaintains strong reconciliations and internal controlsEffectively partners with HR, Payroll Operations, and Accounting stakeholdersCompliance StatementThis job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
