Join the team at Canyon Ranch as a Payroll Assistant Manager, where you will play a key leadership role in ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll operations across the organization. This position is ideal for an experienced payroll professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys leading and developing staff, and brings a strong understanding of payroll systems, compliance, and operational excellence.

 

The Payroll Assistant Manager partners closely with Payroll, HR, and HRIS teams to support payroll operations, improve processes, maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, and provide guidance to managers and colleagues across the business. This role also supports training initiatives, process documentation, and system enhancements.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise daily payroll operations to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing
  • Lead, coach, and develop payroll team members, including performance management and training
  • Partner with HR and HRIS teams to resolve payroll-related issues and improve processes
  • Review payroll reports, audits, and reconciliations to ensure data integrity and compliance
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of federal and state payroll and employment laws
  • Develop, maintain, and update Payroll Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Train managers and supervisors on payroll and timekeeping procedures and best practices
  • Support payroll system enhancements, testing, and implementation of new processes
  • Prepare ad hoc reporting and assist with payroll analysis as needed
  • Ensure confidentiality and accuracy in handling sensitive employee and payroll information
  • Monitor changing payroll regulations and recommend policy or procedural updates as needed
  • Manage staffing schedules, approve time off, and support department operational needs
Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of progressive payroll experience in a multi-state or complex payroll environment
  • Prior staff management or team leadership experience required
  • Strong hands-on payroll experience required; candidates should be able to independently manage payroll processes without needing foundational payroll training
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, wage and hour compliance, and payroll best practices
  • Experience working with payroll systems such as ADP Payroll Enterprise or similar platforms preferred
  • Above-average Microsoft Excel skills required, including reporting, formulas, and data analysis
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across all levels of the organization
  • Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
  • High attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
