Job Description

Payroll Manager

Anesthesia Management Professionals, Inc. (AMP)
San Diego, CA | Kearny Mesa / Ruffin Road Area
Primarily Onsite | Exempt
Compensation: $125,000 base salary annually

Make an Impact in a High-Ownership Payroll Role

Anesthesia Management Professionals, Inc. (AMP) is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee payroll and compensation processes for our physicians and staff. Reporting to the Controller, this is a highly visible, hands-on role for an accounting and payroll professional who enjoys taking ownership, solving problems, and working directly with physicians, leadership, and colleagues across the organization.

The Payroll Manager will be responsible for the accurate and timely processing of bi-weekly and monthly payrolls, payroll tax reporting, pension allocations, payroll controls, and related accounting activities. You'll manage payroll for approximately 250 physicians and 20 bi-weekly employees, while helping ensure compensation practices and financial allocations are accurate, well documented, and aligned with organizational policies.

This position is primarily onsite in the Kearny Mesa/Ruffin Road area of San Diego, with the potential for some flexibility to hybrid after approximately six months of training.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the physician and staff compensation process and associated payroll systems with minimal supervision from the Controller
  • Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll for approximately 20 hourly and salaried employees and monthly payroll for approximately 250 physicians
  • Ensure payroll deadlines are met, and deductions, tax withholdings, expense allocations, and physician-related adjustments are processed accurately
  • Maintain and strengthen payroll controls, procedures, and documentation
  • Prepare and submit quarterly and annual payroll tax reports, including year-end W-2 processing
  • Create payroll and financial reports using internal systems, Crystal Reports, Excel, and other reporting tools
  • Process pension allocations in accordance with plan guidelines
  • Implement and document Board and management policies and procedures related to payroll and compensation
  • Research and resolve payroll and compensation questions or discrepancies from physicians, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Partner directly with physicians during new hire orientation to help them understand compensation processes
  • Work collaboratively with Accounting, Financial Services, management, and other internal departments
  • Support general ledger activities and special accounting and financial projects as needed
  • Help ensure accurate allocation of applicable expenses to the company and individual physicians
  • Maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive compensation and financial information

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of four years of accounting experience, including general ledger experience
  • Hands-on payroll experience with a strong understanding of payroll processes, controls, deductions, tax withholding, and reporting
  • Knowledge of applicable accounting and payroll-related government regulations and requirements
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with detailed financial data
  • Experience with accounting software; Microsoft Dynamics GP/Great Plains experience is preferred
  • Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Comfortable communicating with physicians, employees, management, and external stakeholders regarding detailed or sensitive compensation matters
  • Collaborative, approachable working style and willingness to partner closely with a small internal team
  • Ability to learn and work effectively within internally developed systems and processes

What Success Looks Like

You'll thrive in this role if you are someone who takes ownership of the details while keeping the bigger financial picture in mind. You're comfortable investigating discrepancies, communicating with people at different levels of the organization, and ensuring payroll is completed correctly and on time.

The year-end period is particularly important for this position. Activity increases beginning shortly after Thanksgiving and continues through December as the team completes year-end payroll and financial close activities. Some extended hours may be necessary during this period, and the team works on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day and New Year's Day are paid holidays.

Why Join AMP?

This is an opportunity to step into a trusted position with meaningful responsibility for one of the organization's most important financial functions. You'll have direct exposure to physicians and organizational leadership, ownership of complex compensation processes, and the opportunity to contribute to both day-to-day operations and longer-term improvements within the Financial Services team.

If you're an experienced payroll and accounting professional who values accuracy, accountability, collaboration, and the opportunity to truly own your work, we'd like to hear from you.

Anesthesia Management Professionals, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
