Payroll Tax and Compliance Analyst

NextStep Recruiting has partnered with a healthcare services organization to identify a Payroll Tax & Compliance Analyst for a 6-month contract. This position is fully remote and can be based anywhere in the U.S., but candidates must be available to work Central Time business hours.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented payroll professional with deep payroll tax knowledge who can step into an established process quickly. The primary focus will be payroll tax compliance, reporting, and multi-state support, with significant exposure to California payroll requirements.

Required:

• Strong hands-on payroll experience with in-depth knowledge of payroll tax processes, including tax account maintenance, liability payments, quarterly filings, and year-end reporting
• Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations with the ability to interpret complex tax requirements
• Experience supporting multi-state payroll tax operations; exposure to California payroll tax regulations is strongly valued
• Proven ability to manage complex processes, maintain accuracy, and consistently meet strict deadlines
• Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment

Preferred:

• 2–3+ years of California payroll tax experience
• 2+ years of multi-entity payroll processing experience
• CPP or FPC certification
• Experience supporting payroll activities related to mergers or acquisitions
• Experience with common enterprise payroll, tax compliance, and reporting platforms

This 6-month contract pays $30–$35/hour and is expected to begin around late September or sooner, allowing for knowledge transfer with the current team member before their leave.
