Position Summary

The Payroll Technician processes multi-group payrolls, including hourly/biweekly (non-exempt) and semi-monthly/administrative (exempt), with precision and care. The role manages Human Resources Information System (HRIS) updates, audits pay data, coordinates with departments, and delivers responsive customer service to employees. This position contributes to continuous improvement by documenting procedures and helping reduce manual processes.

Essential Functions

Run payrolls accurately and on schedule for bi-weekly and semi-monthly cycles, including:

Validating time and attendance; reviewing and correcting exceptions promptly. Setting up, calculating, withholding, and remitting garnishments. Tracking and processing leave accruals/balances. Producing and distributing required payroll reports.

Complete new-hire payroll setup and associated regulatory reporting. Maintain payroll and onboarding records through the electronic HRIS/document systems. Respond to employee inquiries with timely, accurate, and courteous support. Document and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for payroll processes; keep current as systems and policies evolve. Safeguard confidentiality of payroll and related HR information at all times. Demonstrate reliability and professionalism: arrive on time, attend work regularly, and complete assigned responsibilities. Comply with College policies, procedures, and practices.

Secondary/Support Functions

Cross-train with the Payroll Specialist to ensure functional coverage and continuity. Assist in other Human Resources functions during peak cycles or as assigned. Serve on campus committees as requested. Perform other duties as designated by the Director of Human Resources.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (especially Excel); ability to generate routine reports and learn new systems continuously. Strong customer service skills with the ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree in business, accounting, HR, or related field. Prior payroll processing experience and knowledge of payroll compliance (taxes, garnishments, wage/hour rules). Working knowledge of KPERS (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System). Experience with BambooHR, Paylocity, and/or SoftDocs (or comparable HRIS/Applicant Tracking (ATS)/document systems). Conflict resolution skills and experience supporting a diverse employee population.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements

Primarily sedentary, indoor office environment with extensive keyboard/computer use. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods; perform fine motor movements for data entry and office equipment; read screens and printed materials; hear and communicate clearly in person and by phone. Duties must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation consistent with the ADA.

Compensation & Employment Status - Emergency Status This position is a full-time, non-exempt, at-will position. The Payroll Technician works 12-months of the year. The hourly rate of pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience, as determined by HutchCC. This position may occasionally require work on college recognized holidays or weekends to meet payroll timelines.
