PCB Assembly Technician

A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Assembler constructs, populates, and solders electronic components onto bare circuit boards to create functional electronic assemblies. They translate engineering schematics into finished hardware, using both manual hand tools and automated manufacturing equipment while adhering to strict quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpreting Documentation: Read and analyze engineering schematics, assembly drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and work instructions.
• Component Preparation: Pre-form, trim, and prepare electronic components (e.g., resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits) for installation.
• Assembly Execution: Perform both Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-Hole (PTH) assembly by placing components accurately onto the board.
• Soldering: Utilize soldering irons, wave soldering machines, and reflow ovens to create secure, defect-free electrical connections.
• Equipment Operation: Set up, program, and operate automated manufacturing equipment like Pick and Place machines and solder paste stencil printers.

· · Quality Control: Inspect completed boards using visual aids, microscopes, or automated optical inspection (AOI) e quipment to verify polarity, alignment, and solder joint integrity.

· · Rework and Repair: Troubleshoot defective boards, de-solder faulty components, and repair or rework circuits to meet operational standards.

· · Compliance: Maintain a clean workspace, strictly follow Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) safety protocols, and handle hazardous materials safely

Required Skills & Qualifications

· Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of electronics, component identification, and circuit schematics.

· Manual Dexterity: Excellent fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for manipulating microscopic components.

· Tool Proficiency: Experience using hand tools (cutters, tweezers, heat guns) and soldering equipment.

· Attention to Detail: High capacity to identify minute defects, ensure correct polarity, and prevent cross-contamination.

· Education and Experience

· Education: A High School Diploma or GED is the standard minimum requirement. Vocational, trade school, or specialized certificates in electronics manufacturing are preferred.

· Certifications: Many employers require or highly prefer certifications in industry standards set by IPC—most notably IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies) and J-STD-001 (Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies).

· Experience: 1 to 3 years in electronics manufacturing or a similar assembly-heavy production environment.

Work Environment

• Physical Demands: Requires sitting or standing for long periods, frequently working under magnifying lamps or microscopes.
• Conditions: Typically operates in a climate-controlled, well-lit manufacturing or cleanroom facility. Strict adherence to safety gear (safety glasses, ESD wrist straps, and smocks) is mandatory
