Mission or Goal of Unit: The division of pediatric critical care medicine at the Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU is comprised of ten faculty members, seven advanced practice providers, and four critical care fellows.  The division is actively involved in international groups such as PALISI, PNCRG, and VPS to support the advancement of pediatric critical care research. 

Chief Purpose of this position: The Division of Critical Care Medicine of the Department of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) seeks an exceptional intensivist physician-scientist who specializes in pediatric critical care medicine and clinical, translational, or health services research related to intensive care medicine to serve as the Director of CHoR Critical Care Research.  Successful candidates are those who are dynamic and collaborative clinicians who can lead and inspire innovative research at VCU, fully leveraging the immense talent and resources available at the VCU School of Medicine, the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, and the Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU Child Health Research Institute. 

The candidate will spend the predominance of their professional time performing research and anchoring the research mission for the Division of Critical Care Medicine. In addition, the candidate will provide clinical care in the 24-bed state of the art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the new free-standing Children Tower of the Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU and actively participate in the education of fellows, residents, and students. The successful candidate will join the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU as an Associate or Professor of Pediatrics.

Position Responsibilities:

• Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the area of Critical Care Medicine. Faculty member will provide teaching and mentorship to Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows when applicable.
• Research: Faculty member will have advanced knowledge in research methods and be able to participate in either basic, clinical, translational, and/or outcomes research. Faculty member will have experience in securing revenue through grants and contracts and will serve as a research mentor to other members of the division and the Department of Pediatrics.
• Service: Faculty member will serve on departmental, hospital, or School of Medicine level committees when appropriate, as well as professional activities through journal review, conference presentations, etc.
• Clinical: Faculty member will serve as a pediatric critical care medicine physician for the Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care. The division provides 24/7 coverage of the intensive care unit. 
• Other (For instance administrative duties): Faculty member will take on administrative duties associated with this role. It is also expected that this individual will maintain all required certifications for themselves and their laboratory personnel such as CITI and IACUC training certificates.

Required Qualifications: 

• Possesses minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in pediatric critical care medicine and at the level of an associate or full professor
• Ability to obtain a valid medical license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Board-certified in pediatric critical care medicine.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
• Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and other healthcare technology systems.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Additional training and/or extensive experience caring for pediatric surgical/trauma patients
• Additional training and/or extensive experience caring for congenital heart surgery patients
• Applicants with clinical or basic science research experience and the ability to apply for and obtain early career awards from the NIH or other funding agencies.
• Success in generating revenue (grants/contracts)
• Possession of a master's or PhD-level research training
