Peer Advisors enhance students' understanding of university policy and support networks while fostering a sense of belonging.
UAA Peer Advisors are a vital part of the academic support network, serving as the first point of contact for students seeking guidance. Housed within the academic advising department, Peer Advisors provide peer-level support on academic processes, institutional resources, student success strategies, and key university technologies. While not a substitute for professional advisors, they play a critical role in helping students navigate registration, course prerequisites, financial aid basics, and tools like DegreeWorks-ultimately enhancing understanding of university policies, reducing wait times, and fostering a sense of belonging.
Successful Peer Advisors are approachable, dependable student leaders who enjoy helping others. They should have strong communication skills, a basic understanding of UAA's academic systems, and a willingness to learn and apply university policies. The ability to problem-solve, work collaboratively, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced student services environment is key to supporting fellow students effectively.
