Position Summary

Hours Per Week: Up to 19.5 hours per week

Department: Desert Vista Campus - TRiO Student Support Services Program

Rate of Pay: $15.45/hour

The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) is looking for Peer Mentors to work in the TRiO Centers at the Desert Vista Campus and West Campus. TRiO SSS Peer Mentors will be expected to attend and participate in Mentor training prior to the start of their work assignments. Peer mentors support college students with organization, accessing campus resources, and course guidance as needed. Peer Mentors support students as they navigate the college's social network and skills necessary to self-advocate. In addition, Peer Mentors assist with the program's intake process by conducting New Student Interviews with incoming TRiO participants and scoring applications. Peer Mentors may also be asked to support other TRiO SSS programming as needed, including but not limited to, new participant orientation; college success workshops; general office duties, etc.) or other TRiO initiatives for students throughout the academic year.

PCC Peer Mentors provide students with a welcome and introduction to the College. Peer Mentors will be responsible for orienting students via email, phone, or in person at one of our TRiO SSS centers and checking in with students throughout the semester. Peer Mentors will be required to travel to more than one campus for work assignments when needed. Peer Mentors will also support project programming college-wide.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and will include working evenings. General center hours are 8am - 5pm, Monday through Thursday.

About Temporary Employment:

This position has 1 vacant position and will establish a qualified applicant pool for part-time temporary positions. Applications will remain active for 6 months to a year and selected candidates may be contacted as positions become available or when immediate staffing needs arise. Placement in the pool does not guarantee employment. The applicant pool will be refreshed annually.

Temporary applicants may be hired for specific assignments or placed in an applicant pool for future opportunities, depending on enrollment levels and business needs. If selected from this pool of applicants, candidates contacted will receive details regarding the specific assignment and will have the opportunity to confirm interest and availability.

We are seeking dedicated part-time temporary employees to join our qualified applicant pool. Selected candidates will be considered for placement as positions become available or when immediate staffing needs arise.

Part-time temporary roles offer flexible scheduling and the opportunity to support a diverse population of students in achieving their educational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Peer Mentors will assist with the following, which may include but are not limited to:

  • Greeting students professionally in person or by phone in the TRiO centers, or at other TRiO programming events

  • Helping students navigate college processes, such as how to use MyPima, how to complete college requirements, how to connect with their assigned advisor, counselor, or student life coordinator, etc.

  • Contacting students to register, confirm, and/or reschedule participation in a New Student Intake, Group Advising Session, Student Welcome events, etc.

  • Manage TRiO social media accounts and, as well as assist with content creation and production of promotional materials

  • Assist with keeping TRiO website updated

  • Supporting the maintenance of students' digital files

  • Maintain accurate and up to date student application in a tracking sheet

  • Update college resources hub

  • Providing check-in and registration at each programming event

  • Leading a small group of new students in icebreaker and discussions

  • Providing tours of the PCC campuses

  • Helping students navigate their first steps in preparing for college, including answering questions about resources and the student experience

  • Assisting students in setting up and navigating various digital resources like MyPima, D2L, Banner, MyDegreePlan, etc.

  • Following up with students after Student Affairs programming events

  • Knowing about and sharing opportunities to build connections to the college such as PCC Student Life, student clubs and organizations, leadership opportunities, how to get involved, and the value of student engagement

  • Leadership and Civic Engagement

  • Support the planning and implementation of TRiO SSS programming events

  • Assist in developing and facilitating leadership training opportunities for students as peer mentors during co-curricular programming events

  • Assist with the assessment and evaluation of programming events

  • Encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities

  • General Office Duties

  • Call/Text students to remind them about upcoming advising appointments or other program events

  • Maintain and update TRiO SSS inventory

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Current Pima Community College and/or University of Arizona (UofA) student

  • Achieve satisfactory academic progress (2.5 GPA and 70% completion rate or higher preferred)

And

  • Be registered for at least 6 credits at PCC or UofA for the following semester

  • Available to work flexible shifts and at multiple campus locations, when needed

Preferred:

  • A current TRiO SSS participant or alumnus

  • Mentoring Experience

  • Bilingual in Spanish

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • At least one (1) semester - Experience in student leadership opportunities, service learning projects, college work experience, and/or experience working with high school or college

  • students; OR customer service experience

  • Dependable

  • Skills in leading small groups

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication

  • Ability to provide superior customer service

  • Experience in coordinating and prioritizing while performing multiple tasks

  • Ability to adhere to College standards and practices

  • Development of positive and cooperative interpersonal relationships

  • Effective at time management and working independently
