As a Peer Support Specialist, youll use your lived experience and professional skills to build trust, inspire hope, and help individuals navigate the path toward recovery. Working in partnership with Cone Health and the Office of Community Safety, youll play a vital role in advancing Greensboros commitment to compassionate public safety, equitable access to care, and healthier communities.

About the Role

The BRIDGE (Building Recovery through Intervention, Dignity, Guided Engagement) Peer Support Specialist serves individuals referred from Wesley Long Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital, and Behavioral Health Urgent Care following an accidental overdose or while experiencing chronic substance use challenges.

Using a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed approach, youll provide intensive follow-up, peer support, education, and advocacy to help individuals connect with treatment, housing, healthcare, and other essential resources after discharge.

Working closely with Community Safety staff, healthcare providers, and community partners, youll help remove barriers to recovery while empowering individuals to build healthier, more stable lives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Build trusting relationships with individuals referred through the BRIDGE Program.
  • Provide peer support, encouragement, education, and recovery coaching.
  • Conduct community outreach and ongoing engagement.
  • Assist individuals with accessing emergency shelter, housing, and supportive services.
  • Connect clients with medical care, behavioral health treatment, substance use services, and basic needs resources.
  • Assist with applications for Medicaid, disability benefits, food assistance, and other public benefits.
  • Provide crisis intervention and supportive guidance as needed.
  • Coordinate care with Cone Health, Community Safety staff, Greensboro Police Department officers, and community agencies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, trainings, and case coordination.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and program records in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Represent the BRIDGE Program in community meetings and collaborative initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess:

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in mental health, substance use services, peer support, or a related field.
  • Experience with case management or care coordination.
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential, or eligibility to obtain certification based on personal recovery history and current length of recovery.
  • Valid Drivers License.
