Since 1968, the Greater Sacramento Urban League (GSUL) has served as a cornerstone of the Sacramento region, championing civil rights and economic self-reliance through life-changing education, housing, and workforce development programs. We are looking for purpose-driven professionals who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments and are ready to turn their technical expertise into community empowerment.
At GSUL, you aren't just filling a position; you are joining a historic legacy of social justice. Here, your daily work directly fuels meaningful organizational growth and supports our mission to build a more equitable future for all. If you are a detail-oriented collaborator ready to make a direct community impact, we invite you to build your career where it matters most.
In this role, you'll use your lived experience to inspire healing, resilience, and confidence. You'll be a relatable role model who empowers young people to build coping skills, self-advocate, and stay connected to support systems that uplift them.
As a Youth Peer Support Specialist, every day brings opportunities to support growth and spark change:
Provide trauma-informed, strengths-based peer support through 1:1 and group interactions
Build meaningful, culturally responsive relationships based on trust and mutual respect
Support youth in navigating mental health, housing, employment, and education resources
Co-facilitate youth groups and wellness activities that foster empowerment and belonging
Advocate for youth needs during appointments, meetings, and with community partners
Collaborate closely with mental health clinicians and multidisciplinary team members
Maintain documentation and privacy standards using electronic health records (EHR)
Celebrate milestones and progress - big and small
This is not just a role - it's a commitment to walking alongside youth on their path to stability and self-discovery.
We recognize that lived experience is an essential qualification for this role.
Required:
Peer Support Certification (or ability to obtain shortly after hire)
Experience using lived experience to support others in recovery and resilience
Ability to connect authentically with diverse youth populations
Knowledge of trauma-informed and strengths-based support practices
Strong communication, active listening, and rapport-building skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
Preferred Skills:
Motivational interviewing and youth engagement strategies
Understanding of adolescent behavioral health
Experience facilitating groups, workshops, or community-building activities
Familiarity with social determinants of health and community-based supports
Previous work/volunteer experience in youth-serving or mental-health settings
You'll be part of an innovative, youth-centered model backed by a strong mission-driven organization. Here, your voice matters - and your work directly contributes to building a healthier community for young people in Sacramento.
If you're excited to be a champion for young people and use your lived experience to uplift others - we'd love to hear from you.
