This position performs routine cleaning, basic maintenance, and building support tasks to ensure school facilities and grounds are well-maintained and operational. Key Responsibilities:Building Cleaning and MaintenanceMaintain cleanliness of buildings and premises, including classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas. Sweep, clean, and dust classrooms and furniture daily. Clean, disinfect, and maintain bathrooms, sanitary fixtures, and drinking fountains. Keep floors clean, safe, and in good condition. Ensure the building and grounds are free from rubbish, debris, odors, and pests; inspect grounds daily. Building Operations and SafetyArm and disarm the building as assigned, ensuring all doors, windows, and areas are secured. Ensure lights are turned off and security lighting is activated as appropriate. Monitor and regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and energy efficiency. Check exit doors and panic hardware daily to ensure proper operation. Assist with fire drills, safety procedures, and emergency preparedness activities. Shovel, plow, and sand sidewalks, walkways, steps, and parking areas as needed. General Maintenance and SupportPerform general maintenance, electrical, and troubleshooting, including minor building and equipment repairs.Report major repair needs to the Head Custodian. Assist with moving furniture and equipment for school activities. Comply with procedures for storage and disposal of trash and waste materials. Remain on school premises during assigned hours and during authorized building use when required. Additional ResponsibilitiesMay supervise summer/temporary custodians.Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian or designee. Education & Experience:High school diploma, GED, or trade school certification required. Experience in custodial or maintenance work preferred. Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge of custodial practices, cleaning methods, and building maintenance. Ability to perform minor maintenance and basic troubleshooting. Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a clean and orderly environment. Ability to work independently and follow assigned schedules. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and supervisors. Commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming school environment. Physical and Cognitive Demands:Work in this classification requires frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and use of tools and equipment.The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 90 pounds. Tasks may include pushing and pulling equipment such as tables, bleachers, and cleaning machines.Vision requirements include close, color, peripheral, and depth perception, with vision correctable to 20/20. The employee must be able to hear clearly in a variety of environments.The employee regularly works indoors and occasionally outdoors. Work may occur near moving mechanical equipment and may involve exposure to cleaning agents, degreasers, and other chemicals. The position may involve working under time constraints.
