Definition of Class
- Provides direct customer service and instruction to library patrons. Utilizes basic knowledge of library services including electronic databases, current technologies, and community resources. Operates in a diverse, rapidly changing environment to provide excellent service to library users.
Nature of Work
- This is a per diem position that would work primarily evening and weekend shifts when coverage is needed.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Interacts with patrons in-person, over the telephone, and online to offer assistance in accessing information and library collections in a variety of formats, including both print and digital, personally helping them find the best resource for what they need. Maintains working knowledge of both print and digital library resources and instructs patrons in their use. Assists patrons with the computer catalog and other electronic resources, and guides patrons in use of Internet services. Adheres to library and information ethics standards, including a dedication to patron privacy. Performs other activities needed to maintain the public library.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- The position requires an excellent public service attitude.
- Must possess a genuine enthusiasm for, and experience in, working with people of all ages, and a strong knowledge of information resources and current technology trends. Must possess demonstrable computer and technology related skills on all manner of PCs and mobile devices. Must know how to use the Online Public Access Catalogs, electronic resources, and other information technology sources to research, obtain and access program materials needed to fulfill the job responsibilities.
- Ability to interpret and communicate library policy to staff, patrons, and the community and resolve patron problems when necessary. Must possess people skills and include the ability to communicate effectively, an expression of patience, friendliness, and courteousness, and a desire to help others.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 9 credit hours in library science and experience in a library or education setting strongly preferred.
Conditions Of Employment
- The selected candidate will be pre-employment required to obtain, at their own expense, 3 forms of clearance, including PA State Police Criminal History Record Check; PA Child Abuse history; and FBI Criminal History Background Check including finger printing.
