Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Tumor Registrar - Cancer Center.
Certified Tumor Registrars are responsible for cancer identification using all available case finding techniques; identifies all reportable cases; retrieves and compiles standard core information from the patients electronic medical records in EPIC and Varian. Abstracts patient information from paper and or electronic medical record systems; codes demographics and cancer information and treatment utilizing required manuals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Compiles and abstract records of hospital patients treated for cancer cases in our cancer registry database. Obtains core information from patients medical records from EPIC and Varian, including demographic characteristics, history of cancer, diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, stage of disease, extent of disease, and treatments according to standards and requirements set forth by regulatory agencies.
  • Reviews and performs case finding on all consults and or encounters from EPIC to include Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and or outside treatment information according to standards and requirements set forth by regulatory agencies.
  • Contacts physician offices and other registries either by telephone, email, fax and or letter to complete data on the first course of treatment for each patient with a diagnosis of cancer. Documents any missing treatment and or procedures performed at outside facilities following discharge from this institution and documenting in the registry abstract.
  • Reviews and adds cases to be included in cancer registry database.
  • Performs active follow-up activities for all analytic cases to include care and/or subsequent treatment, type of recurrence, date of recurrence, date last cancer (tumor) status, according to standards and guidelines of regulatory agencies.
  • Functions as a liaison with ACoS CoC, ACS, NCI, SEER, and NYS DoH Cancer Registry. Routinely contacts regulatory agencies to ascertain information on any changes to staging, treatments, standards and/or guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Oncology Data Specialist certification from the National Cancer Registrars Association is required. Minimum 1 year of abstracting experience in an ACoS CoC accredited facility. Associates Degree in Health Sciences, Health Administration, Cancer Registry Management, Public Health or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Excellent communication (both written and oral), detail orientation, customer service, organization, and multitasking skills Required. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office especially Word, Excel, and Outlook Required..

Required Licenses: Oncology Data Specialist

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the Impac Registry and the New York State Tumor Registry abstraction system.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $54.42 - $60.19 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
